Unpaid overtime in sales

I’m in an inside sales role (ISR). How does Dell get away with expecting us to work overtime but we aren’t “approved” to work overtime? I was told long ago that you can’t expect to be successful in sales if you only work 40 hours and I’ve always agreed. Now with the whole “do more with less” and unobtainable quotas it’s very hard to hit accelerators which in the past made up for it.

Good luck.
When i was an ISR(CEE), i worked 10-12 hours a day first two years and there was no other backup for my time off, so basically i didnt take any vacation because mngmt wouldnt approve new hires. I was young but my health started to deteriorate and When i asked for for overtime to be paid, i got told that if i dont want this job someone else will gladly take it..
It became slight better with time, but still we dont have many benefits other ISRs in other regions have. Once i heard that there are triple the number of ISRs in western countries than in our region, with same amount to accounts/AE's. So i felt as cheap labor.

@etv+1q0JnA4X - I'm not sure, I don't see it in Workday but I do have to log my hours, otherwise I don't get paid. My comp is 70/30 - 120k yr.

are you exempt or hourly? If you are exempt, ya, don't expect overtime pay.

Also an ISR in Emea.
Dell doesnt expect you to work more than 40 hours a week but they do expect you to pull a rabbit out of a hat every quarter to hit insane targets.
They are trying to push sales staff out the door to reduce any severance they will have to pay.
I was also told long ago that unhappy sales staff dont sell and very few are happy.
Even if you do hit targets by some miracle they will cap you in some way and try to reduce the payout on commision.
I have heard it happen numerous times in the last 9 months.

Sales jobs can be tough since many sales people work on commission. Many companies are asking their employees to work more with no overtime pay and only the base salary. I have done that for years and years at my company (not Dell) and many folks tell me this is the new normal. Everyone works on the weekends and late nights when needed without overtime pay. Actually, it's the USA labor laws that are not strict enough. The law says, if you are a full-timer with salary (yearly) wages above a certain amount (I think it's $60,000) then the company doesn't need to pay overtime. Take a look at the labor laws in your state. And if the company is just following the law, then they will never voluntarily pay overtime to anyone (not just sales, but engineering as well).
