Thread regarding VMware layoffs

Stress and anxiety is unreal

Not here to say the deal will close or not close. But, the level of stress and anxiety over the last one month has been at unreal levels.
I’m hoping fellow employees come out of this disaster of an M&A safe and sound.

VMW and Broadcom - you can blame it on geopolitics. But both of you get a solid F- for how you handled this.

Broadcom for providing false hope that this deal will close on Oct 30th, sending offer letters before deal close and dividing the employees, locking up the stocks that were tendered BEFORE you met the closing criteria.

VMware for not standing for its employees and let Broadcom run the show. Yes, this is a Broadcom acquisition, but you are the definition for spineless puppets. You have the audacity to ask us to work like “independent company” when in these uncertain times, we are facing life changing events?

Just pray that you are not going to get pulled to the courts.

Raghu Raghuram is the worst CEO VMware ever had.

Raghu did what was expected of him. His role was to keep the status quo until the acquisition was prepared, announced and closed. His job was not to take us to the next level but to keep things steady for Broadcom.

Raghu Raghuram is the worst CEO VMware ever had. Pat left him a gold mine and he has done nothing to take the company to the next level. If the deal doesn't close, he and the rest of the Executive Leadership team need to be gone effective immediately. Bring in consultants to clean up their mess. Employees have seen the true colors of this pretentious executive leadership team who have pretended to value their employees. The only thing they really value is their pockets. Even though I got an offer letter and will be ok, I hate what they are doing to my fellow employees. I can't blame HT or BC for this, it's all on the VMware leadership team who will be laughing their way to the bank while the employees who got them there are left jobless, stressed out, and broke.

"Hock was running VMware before he actually owned VMware. Ideally, VMware would have pushed back on everything until they had confirmation."

Let's not forget, Michael Dell installed a custodian CEO (Raghu) to essentially do nothing, other than follow the board of director's plan. That doesn't excuse the VMW leadership team's lies and optimistic misinformation, but it does explain how we got here.

I have only one regret, that I didn't leave last year when the acquisition by AVGO was announced and the job market was more robust. In hindsight, that was a huge mistake.

Hock Tan's reputation and business model were known back then. Nothing changed.

"Whatever you think Hock did is what any rational business person would do. Prioritize what makes money, deprioritize what doesn't. Adjust staffing to match."

Not at all. In my BU he had them ignore the paying customer segment and the selling product and focus on this new product that doesn't have a good use case or a clearly identified addressable market. It's a total co-k up. And this isn't whinging you li--y.

"Exactly what did they do? I've been through multiple acquisitions. Everything here is just tightening budgets and locking the books down, as is normal for M&A and IPO. What direction did Hock Tan give VMW to take that they would not have already done?"

Hock Tan mismanaged this acquisition. VMware should have kept functioning as it has since the acquisition was announced - until they got hard confirmation. Instead, they worked as though they had everything ready - lied about it (they said it wasn't political, yet they are seeking a political solution). That's what's made this acquisition messy. Like has been pointed out many times - Intel was in exactly the same situation with Tower Semiconductor - have a look at the Tower Semiconductor forum - no anxiety - they let Tower run unimpeded until they knew for sure one way or the other. The layoffs, etc are normal ONCE you actually own the firm, not before. This is what has made this an unmitigated sh-t show - Hock was running VMware before he actually owned VMware. Ideally, VMware would have pushed back on everything until they had confirmation. Hock has been known for his bluffs.

“Co--y” is the word one person close to the transaction uses to describe Mr Tan and his team. Their time in the White House helped blind them to the risks awaiting them, this person said. “The president likes Hock Tan,” they figured, “so that’s it.”

I'm either clueless, or I call out grown adults who constantly whinge about things.

Whatever you think Hock did is what any rational business person would do. Prioritize what makes money, deprioritize what doesn't. Adjust staffing to match. I never got my letter, but it sounds like many others who also didn't are unable to cope with it.

No it's not what VMware would have done. Hock got BUs to focus on some products and customer types and to neglect other products and customer types and the impact will be felt. You are obviously clueless and an apologist.

He influenced what deal to approve.

He shuffled different groups around across BUs so he could have an easier time carving it up post acquisition.

execs at VMware did the bidding of Hock Tan and have ruined the company.

The deal hasn't closed and it isn't going to close, yet execs at VMware did the bidding of Hock Tan and have ruined the company. Oh and thanks for the primer on Capitalism.

"Sold you out"? I'm not sure you understand how this works. Welcome to capitalism. We work for a board of directors comprised of shareholders. They require VMware, and Raghu, to make fiduciary decisions to improve stock prices.

No one is here to give you a hug or a handout. No one in VMware really wanted this to happen. But, if VMware doesn't make it happen, then our stock tanks.

Enjoy working for a boss that caved in to Hock Tan and sold you out.

Silverlake Vanguard Blackrock selling to Silverlake Vanguard Blackrock. This is just a farce. Late stage capitalism.

Remember who was in the resistance and who was a collaborator. Remember who stuck up for VMware and who did the bidding of Broadcom. After this acquistion fail we need to kick the collaborators out of the company.
