Thread regarding Shell Oil layoffs

Shell Recharge Solutions opinion

Hello,l have received an offer from Shell recharge based in Amsterdam but they have their own people's policies and bring in ppl with 1 yr contracts. Given cuts in Low carbon and other sectors, recent conversation with Wael is it really safe to move? I asked to extend the initial contract by 1 more yr which they generally entertain but after 2 weeks of HR discussion with leadership, they couldn't do this and now they have a blanket policy to issue the contracts for only 1yr. Any suggestions?

While you mention that the company does not follow Shell HR policies, they may still be constrained by them or choose to follow them later. Shell has a HR policy (known as the local non-national, LNN policy) to actively frustrate employees from obtaining residency in the country where they work.

Shell will expect you to move back to your home country (also known as your base country) within five years. Personally I ran into this issue when moving to the US (after joining Shell). Even after I had obtained US citizenship without the company's help, they still (unsuccessfully) attempted to force me to leave the U.S.

Thanks for the honest comment man. It is indeed a risky step for me. If they decide not to extend the contract, I would have to move out of EU with in 3 months this would turn my life upside down.

If you are ok with moving / working for a year, then take the role. Not ok with turning your life upside down for a one year contract? Then don’t.

Shell has a history of moving people all over the world, then eliminating their roles when business conditions (or leadership) changes - regardless of the impact to those employees. Poor strategy and terrible culture.
