Has this ever happened to you? Advice. My boss asked me, what do people say about me. Naturally I said no one talks about you to me. But that was a lie. I would love to be able to share the truth, that they are not a good leader, that they do not lead. They have allowed actions to occur that soured both other teams opinion of them but has created a very unhealthy mix of humans who seem to be all working apart and not for them. That people will not do their best for someone who they do not believe in. Even a person such as myself who is internally driven to produce is starting to lose motivation. I should probably have that hard conversation but I do not know if I even care anymore and am starting to look for a new leader or just become one myself. I think I missed the opportunity for change.

In 14yrs I’ve had 10 different managers, two were good. The others weren’t just average, they didn’t seem to have any management dimensions, except for megalomania, which isn’t much of an attribute and you certainly shouldn’t criticize them in any way for your own sake! The shameful way leadership condones cronyism is what I feel is the hidden secret weighing this corporation down. It’s why they are so inefficient and expensive at doing anything and lose contracts. They don’t hire or promote the best people, they hire the cheapest offshore workers and promote their friends, it shouldn’t be this way. Quiet quitting was caused by management!
That boss is a unicorn
Asking for personal feedback from direct reports is a good sign they want to improve. Being a manager can be tricky because the people around you generally say yes instead of their true thoughts. A poor manager uses that feedback against you. A good manager internalizes feedback and improves.
If your boss truly wanted feedback they'd asking their own boss and coworkers, not those who report to them. If they actually want suggestions for the team, they'd ask in a meeting and not put you on the spot. You did the right thing, it is absolutely a trap and zero positive would emerge from feedback for improvement you give them.
Generic response if they are asking you they already know the answer. Zero upside of getting tangled in that drama web. Since it was female manager that is a hard no. Males cannot critique a female in any circumstance since any opinion they dont like tag you it as a s-xist and curtains for you. Move on and make your own world being a manager that people respect and will follow a true leader. You cannot polish a tu-d it just just becomes shiny
So hard to work for someone you don’t respect! Especially when that person evaluates you
Don't be foolish. The truth will only get you in trouble. You'll be the most honorable person collecting unemployment. That doesn't pay the bills.
Sounds like a personal problem on her end.
If that leader asks that question she is not a leader and doesn’t deserve the job.
Tell my supervisor every day she isn't good
Thank you for the feedback. I should have also said my boss is a female since I think that might change how I approach the subject. I wonder if a male boss would be handled differently. It is probably difficult hearing that you su-k at your job no matter your s-x. I have been thinking about it over the weekend. I like the persons answer who said just be a leader. I do not have to like my boss or even respect my boss. I am not stuck on this team, I don't really need a manager. So I will just step up where needed and look for another position. Life is too short to be around so much toxic drama.
Asking what people say about me vs what do you think about xyz are very different. Hard pass on the drama.
Someone ratted his survey, he is trying to fine the mole. You have zero obligation. Stay away from toxicity.
Sounds like they want you to fall on your own sword with your own words……
I see 2 opinions one saying tell them but do so with proper training and the other says don't because you will be targeted. I think they should put their energy into the last thing they said...Figure out how to become a leader yourself since your team is missing one from the sound of it. The sign of a good leader leads by example and maybe the boss will learn from observation. Keep track of when you applied the skills and then when an opportunity arises for a paid position, give examples of where you used the skills just not in title. You can also give your examples without putting someone else down by just showcasing just you and your accomplishments. Grace goes a long way in business.
You sound like you are on my team!
My manager and Associate Director (MJ and JS) are not respected and are not looked up to as leaders or being knowledgeable. The undercurrent of texts and cell calls between team members, during and after team meetings, are hilarious.
I am relatively new in this department, but have heard that previous managers were of high calibre. I guess it is just a sign of the times.
If your manager asks you what is being said about them...don't tell them!! They don't really want to hear the truth!
You will be targeted!!
You just provided the feedback to your boss, he would do well to check it out.
You are missing the opportunity to make a change on your boss, if you avoid to provide feedback. He/ she has trusted you to provide feedback. Go online and learn how to provide feedback before talking to your boss or anyone else.
