Thread regarding VMware layoffs

Biden-Xi meeting in San Francisco still on track but no major breakthroughs expected

Is this the same meeting that's supposed to get a go-ahead for the deal???? Is HT being realistic???? Why hold VMware hostage? Why is Michael Dell allowing this to happen? Ultimately SL + MSD Capital have the final say.

Maybe he can smuggle them in via the Silk Route.

Nothing will come out of this meeting. US will not reverse its bans.
The only way this deal can get China's approval is if HT can figure out how to supply banned chips to China.

Tan said it isn't political.

Tan is lying. There is no way you want to call out Chinese bureaucrats as being political. He's saving face until the deal is done.

Here is what’s on the menu for the meeting. I think we can all agree that a merger between two US companies doesn’t come close anything on this list.

Welcome to geopolitics.

The list of issues expected to arise in the talks is long. It includes restoring military-to-military communication between the two countries, a chief objective for Biden, who plans to press Xi on the issue. Also on the table are the conflicts in Israel and Ukraine; areas of potential cooperation like climate change and countering narcotics trafficking; and deep disagreements over human rights issues and military escalation in the South China Sea and around Taiwan

I thought they met the first weekend of Nov after the Oct 30th fell through. This is taking too long for my mind. I am needing an infographic timeline to keep the events straight.

One news article said that bc met with china's officials "over the weekend". That was the weekend just prior to October 30th. Despite other assurances, that didn't yield any results. Now, the anticipation is that this upcoming summit (and its myriad of sub-meetings, dinners, lunches, etc.) will change things. It won't. This acquisition is too small and too insignificant for either the US or the Chinese government. Perhaps (and I doubt it) Hock managed to get a conditional approval of the sort that says "if your government voids export restrictions on chips, we shall approve"... good luck with that!

@kcy+1pvzutxe Huh? Can you explain it to me like I am a person who works, spends the rest of my time with my family and only notices politics when my job is involved?

That's what everybody thought, including MD & SL. But then Xi laughed.

Tan said it isn't political. If he's right, then it's just a paperwork process and news media making opportunistic headlines about China using the deal for leverage.

What's true is the process isn't transparent to anyone. For what's it's worth the US was pretty clear it planned then blocked Huawei for political security reasons. China hasn't said any kind of thing yet to indicate what demands they have for this deal to close. For a bargaining chip, where's the bargain? So from what we know as facts either Tan or the media headlines could be correct.

3rd government shutdown of the year? Total chaos here.

I hope this goes well. No strange touching. Stay awake. Minimize the mumbling. Contain all body fluids. Then hopefully on to some level of diplomacy, leading to deal closure
