Thread regarding Dell Inc. layoffs

Reflecting on My Dell Experience

I joined Dell thinking it would be a great place to work, offering both money-making opportunities and a positive atmosphere. However, my experience here over the past two years has been quite different from what I expected. I've faced multiple rounds of layoffs and had to navigate a highly competitive environment. Sadly, I've realized that being successful here often means pleasing others rather than performing well. Meeting challenging targets while dealing with limited resources has made the job very stressful.

Unfortunately, my time at Dell has been marked by unprofessional behavior, racism, and intense competition. I'm okay with working alongside people who have different backgrounds, but it becomes a problem when these differences interfere with our work. Some colleagues seem to create situations on purpose to make others look bad, making the workplace feel like a high school popularity contest. The practice of trying to get ahead by being overly flattering is disheartening, and it's even worse when people turn hostile once they feel secure in their positions.

Given these experiences, I'm questioning the values of our workplace. I had hoped for a supportive and inclusive community, but my encounters here have been far from that. I hope these issues can be addressed to create a more respectful and fair environment for everyone.

Also, I have some reservations about the way the company handled the recent incident at RR. In the initial three days following the incident, our leaders made an effort to reach out to teams and inquire about our well-being. However, it's disheartening to note that these check-ins ceased before the week was over. This gives the impression that we might be perceived merely as numbers, rather than as individuals. It's quite contradictory to their attempts to portray the company as a family.

It's clear that there's a disconnect in how we view our relationship with the company, especially between employees and the employer. I'm growing increasingly frustrated with the lack of authenticity I perceive in some of our colleagues. The workplace environment sometimes feels reminiscent of a situation where adults are acting like they're still in diapers.

Gen next.... I feel sorry for the gullible young folks who lap up the bullsh-t and think their careers are going to benefit. You will be broke on the brutal salaries ( left with pennies). Look after yourself and get out

I work in Emea in Dublin and they have basically inflated targets so much that very few if anyone across the buisness hit target in q3 and it looks pretty much the same for q4.
Teams working in halfs are the exact same.
The constant re orgs and cuts dont help the situation and morale is at an all time low in the years since i joined.
Why would young spotty faced kids want to join Dell?
The kicker is thats what Dell wants so they can under pay them and work them to the bone.
Do more with less is the company motto.

Perfectly said. I was part of EMC for years and was part of the merger. It’s been a total of 18 years. Up until a few years ago things were going well. Then the entire culture changed. It’s like high school. You have little cliques, politics and drama. It’s not interested in real results but fake metrics that mean nothing. For example eNPS. Means nothing. Literally nothing.

This is an HR driven and policy driven company and it’s coming out now. You’ve got bullsh@t spans and layers, title changes, off/onshore ratios, people making engineering decisions who have no idea what they’re doing. Its foolish. BUT if you are friends with someone or buddy buddy then the rules don’t apply. Doesn’t matter if we don’t meet our numbers, we will just layoff more people! Remove the people who are dead weight? Never!

It’s a manufacturing company. I think we forget that. At its core Dell put laptops together and sold them through e-commerce. The closest they came to software engineering was e-commerce!

I shut my mouth, do my job and I see the end of the tunnel soon. Then I’ll be out of here. If you’ve just started in your career get out of here. It’s a terrible company.

why would they hire externally. From what I can tell, the incoming salaries for new hires are much higher than what they're currently paying folks in the same position. It's an insult to the people that are currently here.

No point sticking around. What you say is true for TSB as well. So no hope for change.
Leave as quickly as possible. We are not the back stabbing people so we will be backstabbed when the time is right for " the political " teammates.
Dell desperately trying to hire outsiders, but the political ones are successfully ensuring that their gang continues to rule the roost.
Run and save yourself.

Reading this message I couldn’t help but think of Donald Glover’s This Is America. These problems are not unique to Dell. Sure, some places / industries are better, but for the most part this post could be true about any company of any size. Do what you need to do to live your best life beyond the 40ish hours a week you’re stuck working for one of these demons. That odd what they are. People are but a commodity. To them you are absolutely just a number or even less.

The company is micromanaging now. In ISG, they track if you're using the copilot tool now and if don't have it installed, you're on a list. If you don't take the scrum master training even if you have no desire to ever, ever be a scrum master, you're on a list. If you don't comply, you lose your bonus. Most of these mandates seem to be coming from India. It's all management throwing their weight around. It's just a bad place to be now. So many developers are unhappy. When the market improves a bit, hopefully after the new year, there will be a huge exodus of highly experienced developers making a move.

I'm 63 years old. I worked for EMC/Dell for 39 years. I like what you had to say. The business has changed, and we have not changed. Our work ethic and love for our work is the same, the world and IT has changed for the worse. Enjoy the great memories and everything you got out of the business. I have no complaints because mainframe storage was good to me for a long time. I volunteered for a severance package last February, no regrets.

The place is horrible.Constant layoffs quarter on quarter.Constant re orgs.
Targets that make no sense.
Do more with less is what we are told by senior management every single quarter.
They really dont understand how unhappy staff are or they dont care.
All the family talk is BS.
No future at Dell.
If you can put a plan in place to leave.

It's a dumpster fire. The good people moved on or have quiet quit.

The rest is a bunch of discount tech employees dancing around like they are accomplishing something.
