Thread regarding VMware layoffs

Broadcom not doing VMware any favors

The Register just came up with some research that 1 out of 5 VMware customers plan to move away from our software in the coming year. Now, of course, not all of this is Broadcom, our software is expensive, especially when it's run in a public cloud (on prem, a smart customer can still do pretty well); but man, if this is even close to true, that's not going to be a great first year for Broadcom.

Forrester reckons that up to 20 percent of VMware enterprise customers plan to escape its extensive virtualization stack in the coming year.

In its predictions for 2024, the global IT market researcher said the impending $61 billion acquisition of VMware by telecoms giant Broadcom has "cast a shadow on an already beleaguered VMware customer base."

Former VMware, now in the channel - we're definitely hearing this. Good number of VMW customers are evaluating options right now, and asking us to help them understand what a world without VMware hypervisors could look like. Some are already Nutanix customers and are looking at moving to AHV, some are looking at moving their Windows workloads onto Hyper-V, some are looking at other alternatives like Scale Computing or hybrid offerings from the hyperscalers. We went through this exercise when Citrix was acquired last year, and looks like a lot of customers are for the first time in a long time considering a divorce from VMW.

This ongoing saga with the AVGO acquisition has exposed a flaw in their lean and flat organization business model -- they're incapable of completing a complex deal because their staff (and/or the legal team they've engaged) are not skilled for the job.

Their ongoing mismanagement of the process has had a detrimental effect on employee and customer trust. The media is merely reporting on what we all know to be true.

It's been said before in prior posts on this site, that the damage done to the VMW brand has already destroyed shareholder value that may never be regained. It's a tragedy. No matter how this deal ends, the long-term deep-rooted financial harm is significant.
