Thread regarding SAS Institute layoffs

Part time positions?

Does SAS still allow for part time work in technical roles like dev, test, tech support, etc? I used to know a few people who worked a few days a week but they are all gone now. I was thinking that as I get older this would be a nice transition to retirement, working maybe 3 full days a week instead of 5.

I wonder if being part time makes you more likely or less likely to be considered low-hanging fruit in a layoff.

And you pay more for your benefits like health care, but that seems to be a flat rate, not dependant on how many hours you work. So the best deal would be to work 17.5 hours and get half vacation and pay the same premiums on healthcare as those part timers working more hours.

This sounds like the old "angle of the dangle" argument.

Yes, it is allowed, but a lot of divisions won’t approve it. To the commenters mentioning the pay, it is an exact percentage of your full-time pay. Take your salary, divide by 35, then multiply by 21 or 24 or however many hours you will be working. So yes, you get a salary, but it is the exact same hourly wage as you have been getting. You only get 50% of the vacation days though… even if you are working 75-80% of the hours. Minimum hours for part-time is 17.5.

The ones that have to work over time are the ones that have to pick up the slack from the lazy ones often from the same team. Managers turn blind eyes to the lazy ones and load up more work on the hard working ones.

And there are apparently some who work lots of overtime for no extra pay too!

“What has been phased out?”

That was referring to part-time positions at SAS in testing, dev, etc.

Not written by me, though I do believe it’s accurate.

"No, that’s definitely been transitioned out"

What has been phased out?

So much for the Agile fantasy of getting twice the work down and half the time!

Funny, the expectation of my dev group manager is that we work well beyond 40 hrs. I can’t imagine taking a pay cut for part time and donating additional time to the cause.

Part time jobs replacing full time jobs are an effective cost cutting measure. Eliminate the position, reimagine the position by streamlining it to better support the company mission. Reimagined position is staffed with part time help having a more relevant skill set. Alternatively the replacement person is fulltime but much less costly than the oerson whose job was eliminated. Think India. It is an especially good tactic for any company wanting to fatten their revenue per employee metric.

Seems reasonable to speculate that SAS is doing that. But the key word there is speculation as I'm not inside.

Offer to work for at an Intern's salary and see what happens.
