Thread regarding VMware layoffs

More layoffs after acquisition is closed?

There are rumors that another round of layoffs will come in soon after close like a quarter or two later. Can any Broadcom folks confirm if that's how they operate? It seems like a big blow is already dealt at closing. Does Broadcom micromanage the headcount or leave it to the individual business group?

Please cite your Broadcom team or group if you can. It will help weed out the trolls.

It's not all bad news, during the CA acquisition they actually ended up offering permanent jobs to 100 people who were on long term transition. Almost all of them accepted and 4 years later they are still with the company.
What makes Broadcom worthwhile is the RSUs are growing in value and pay a cash dividend every quarter and the annual bonus is similar to what only sales people get from other companies.

We came from Symantec. There were two main waves of layoffs, first was bigger and the second smaller after half a year or so. It's not designed to sc--w with people, it's simply finding the true optimal structure and staffing required to optimally run business. We ended up hiring back people after a while. It's also true that things are constantly reviewed and adjusted based on needs, business developments and plans (AOP), so yearly +-5% can happen.

They find the 20 percent needed and discard the other 80 percent.

You will tell yourselves many things about your own understanding of what’s possible and your leaders will do the same.

Make it through the three to four years of he-l and you’ll be okay.

Of course there will be more layoffs, that’s not just particular to this acquisition it’s a norm in the merger-acquisition process. Expect 2 or 3 more rounds of mass layoffs… sad but true.

Sebu svp clearly said he plans to do layoffs in 6 months during the last town hall, so there's that

Vmware is not the company it used to be after around 2005/6 as it got infected by people like Alan Fudge who brought in all of his cronies and ruined the company.

Fk VMW and let is rot, get another job somewhere else as this company is done

Ex-Symantec here,

Each yeah expect "optimization":
15% 1st yeah, 10% 2nd, 5-7% each yeah after

If you will survive 3+ years, you will be in a decent financial shape.

Unpopular opinion below...

Symantec was a sinking ship. Broadcom made our division more profitable. We have finished bunch of projects within last 3 years with real impact to the bottom line.

Yes, we lost folks. Some of them were decent co-workers, but most changes were for better at the end.

Broadcom's culture is different. It's not for all, but it has certain value.

If you are a high-performer, I would not worry about future layoffs.

Yes after the initial CA Technologies acquisition we saw another round of layoffs in my group. Things have stabilized the past few years but now I’m hearing rumblings of a product grouping that could be at risk for divestiture.

Depending on which group you work in prepare for things to be fairly turbulent for a few years with possible further layoffs as well as rehires to add talent back where it was mistakingly let go.

Being an employee at Broadcom doesn’t really feel like a “career”. It feels more like fungible consulting work whereby longevity is merely an accident and that at any time you could be “optimized” out of a job.

Since the severance for “resignation” was not detailed, there’s a big group of people just hanging around to see what happens.

“Fine…no severance? I’ll just wait to be fired and take unemployment”. (Bcom: “ok, you’re next”)

Here’s the thing…VMware is broken. There are some people who know how to keep broken parts working and are in this group.

While I’d like bcom to own a magic wand, I don’t think they (I mean we, assuming the deal goes through) have enough juice in the wand.

Probably two or three rounds of layoffs next year. If you’ve accepted a BC offer at lower pay because of “bonus” and “RSUs” keep in mind that when they kick you to the curb you’re only going to get severance based on your new lower pay. Bonus and RSUs are only available after they pay out/vest. All BC has to do to save millions is promise you something they never plan to deliver.

Check this: https://www.thelayoff.com/t/1pixX1wZ

Great reasoning. If we accept lower base, the severance will be lower. BC analysts already did the math to make engineers not only work for free over next 4 to 6 months but also to lose money.

Anyone who accepts the offer and get let go with 6 months will be better off declining and taking severance now. It is not only loss of the ~40% of severance original value but also loss of time, stress, and health consequences.

Yes, there will be 2nd wave after 3 - 6 months, and a3rd wave will happen around 1 year later.

Thanks... are you from Broadcom and do you say this from experience?

More layoffs, with severance based on the new (lower) base salary we accepted.

Damn, they're so smart and crafty over at BC Software. We've been punked!

I love it when I get jacked by a shyster...

Hocks mo is buy a company, fire 75pc of the staff over 12 months resulting in the majority of the customers leaving. If he had brains he would be dangerous.

Definitely. more than one rounds next year.
In CIBG, almost everyone got the offer. They do not have time to do detailed integration. That will happen early next year. Even CIBG is very bloated.
