Thread regarding Teradata Corp. layoffs

More Layoffs

Layoffs again. Expect pushing the narrative of cash flow and profits as an attempt to offset slowing growth in cloud. Predictable and uninspiring playbook.

Layoffs happened on Tuesday

So it took 3 times to get the lay off date correct for USA.

Now it begs the question: is it over today in USA? Or do more layoffs continue on Wednesday?

Everyone good luck

Someone below mentioned the predicted dates shared here for when layoffs are usually 50/50 accurate.

So far in this thread it is 0 correct, 2 wrong.

Anytime before the November all employee meeting seems to be expected, just a matter of when, who, and how many.

Good luck, everyone. If you are impacted I hope you land on your feet somewhere better before the severance ends.

Helpful to know about WARN for California. Thank you for the details!

If WARN act in effect, you get paycheck as normal during 60 days warning period because you are technically still employed but ELT don't want to see your face in the office. After 60 days, the official effective date, which would go into next year, is when you get COBRA, severance pay, and anything else as part of your package on.

If you are told your position has been eliminated or redundant, ask them when did they know and thank them for keeping it a secret from the people they claim they care about.

I appreciate you bringing reason, facts, and experience to your post “Nov 9 2022” laid off colleague (and sorry that it happened to you — hopefully you’ve landed somewhere better in a reasonable time frame)!

100% also recommend Covered CA for health in California instead of Cobra. I used it when I was laid off of a different company about 7-8 years ago, and it was great coverage. I managed to get a Blue Cross Blue Shield plan (one single person) for the low $200s/month that had identical coverage to my employer-provided Blue Cross Blue Shield insurance — with the exception of less coverage for ambulance and small % less for hospitals stays/long term things. But for day to day and prescriptions, no change in coverage at all. What a relief. Was paying about the same price out of pocket when I had the plan under my employer insurance.

When I was laid off 7-8 years ago in California (dozens of others were too, but maybe not 50+) by a Midwest based company we had our final check including severance deposited within a couple business days.

That is good to know that if WARN is triggered it could take 2 full months for the severance check to show up, if I am understanding that correctlyI take it that instead of giving a paycheck every two weeks until two months is reached, they just give a final lump sum paycheck or the severance at the 2 month mark? Ooof.

I agree, the 'pool' is quite insensitive. Since this is that time of year again and that insensitive comment was not helpful at all, I'll attempt to be helpful here.

That said, I wonder if the office pool party resides in California/US and want it to be 50 (or more) in the US due to hoping that it will trigger the California WARN act? This is the act that requires companies to continue to pay the departed employee for 60 days before the employment with that company is finally terminated. Downside being, one doesn't get their severance until sometime after the 60 day period and that date could fall into the next tax year if the notice to terminate arrives sometime in November. Upside is, one can still apply for and collect unemployment benefits THE DAY AFTER the notice of separation meeting (that surprise 10 minute meeting with ex-boss and HR). In California Nov 9th/2022 HR did not inform people of this point and many of us did not apply for unemployment until well after a month had passed since the notification. When I was let go last Nov 9th,2022 - it triggered CA WARN and that provided me with 5 more paychecks with the ability to bank most of it and live off the unemployment and I found it to be financially very helpful.

I wondered if the WARN act would be triggered if TD laid off more than 50 employees but all were not from one area (or even within CA?), Still not 100% sure but found part of an answer to that here:
https://edd.ca.gov/en/jobs_and_training/FAQs_WARN/#:~:text=A%20company%20with%20a%20covered,during%20any%2030%2Dday%20period.

Specific to CA, I found the WARN act to be useful even though the severance got paid out the following year/January so that severance income negatively impacted my monthly Covered California health premium but the impact wasn't too bad. BTW - if anyone from CA gets impacted this year, I wish you the very best going forward. Absolutely check out Covered CA for health insurance instead of Cobra!

Agreed with the post below. The “ We have a pool going based on when 50 are canned.” is exceptionally wicked. REALLY?!

I was made redundant earlier this year. Was told unexpectedly on a call originally set up for a one to one discussion by my line manager and HR rep appeared on the call. The conversation was over in 10 mins.

This is cyclical and the core still survives which leads me to believe that the real issues are not being addressed, just a cost cutting exercise. Until there are changes at all levels, this will continue for years to come unfortunately.

I've got a 30min mtg tomorrow with my boss. Worried? No way. I just live with the hope he starts by saying "we've had to make an organisational restructure".

Or this post "Sometimes I think people make up the layoff dates ... leaked here in an attempt to discredit this page as a source."

is from ELT to instill fear among those below them.

The truth will come out from those who have had enough of the ELT mediocrity and have nothing to lose.

We have so many layoffs now, none include ELT/VPs/directors, and we are still having problems requiring more layoffs. What does that tell you about those id--ts that don't see themselves as the cause?

Sometimes I think people make up the layoff dates they share here.

Other times I wonder if it’s a set up, to narrow down who is spilling information here. Maybe they tell 4 different people privately each a different incorrect weekday, just to see who shares it here or if it hits the Teams chat rumor mill.

Other times I wonder if the weekday was accurate here (in this case, Friday), but got changed at the last minute once ‘they’ read it was leaked here in an attempt to discredit this page as a source.

You don’t get an Email but a calendar invitation from your manager along with an HR representative. The call will take less than 10 minutes. The next business day you will receive a FEDEX package with the details. Accept what they are offering or get nothing. Legal costs to fight are unaffordable. They will say your peer group contains similar aged employees by designating a group of similar aged associates across the country rather than your local team. If chosen you are done. Good luck.

The count on Yammer is 6,941 members on the all company page tonight. Thursday evening.

We’ll see how that number shrinks by early November.

(We were in the 7,000s most of this year. First time I have noticed it dip below 7,000).

So simple ! The best protection against layoffs is signing massively new logos. Migrating customers to cloud and expanding their workload won’t be enough to absorb costs and preserve jobs. Sorry guys !

Past info here on exact date has been 50/50 at best. But usually if incorrect, the date is off only a few weeks

Fits in the pattern of past few years of the fall layoff: occurs sometime last week of October through first two weeks of November. Followed by the November all company meeting where they paint a rosy picture of the layoff and reorg for less than 2 minutes and move on.
