Thread regarding VMware layoffs

This company was my life

I did not get an offer and really did not think that this would be the case.
My team is my family and I’m having a super hard time - feels like a part of me is over

if your entire life revolves around a tech company, then you never really had a life to begin with.

Just because you haven't gotten a letter yet does not mean you are laid off...

This is one of the many reasons why I do not pledge nor give my life to a corporation. The corporation does not care. Cr-p, most of the people running the corporation do not care. So why do I invest everything I have into a place that will not do the same for me? I wont. It is my job and a means to an end. I am still a high performer and give my best but I always put myself first.

“What is your role OP? Mine is sales and trust me my word shattered I literally cried for hours”

OP agai. Here I’m gonna out myself with this one but it doesn’t really matter at this point right?

I’m a senior manager in the TAM practice.

And for the person who made the netflix and money metaphor with family, I just had one of reports insist to call me to tell me he would give me money or whatever I needed.

My team IS family.

I had the best group of people at this damn company and I will be forever grateful.

Onto applying for other jobs now. Cry over.

  1. Sorry to hear that you're having a hard time - it is difficult to lose a job involuntarily, especially one you liked, so if that is the end result, take the time to allow yourself to go through the emotions you need to go through to process it.
  1. It's not the end of the world. Unfortunately, this it tech in the 2020's. Same as it was in the 1990's. These things are cyclical, and it happens in this business. You're not alone. A part of your life is over, but rest assured, there's other great opportunities to be a part of in this business at other organizations. Take this as an opportunity to learn, grow, and be part of something new and different.
  1. While you may have personal relationships with your team, it's helpful to realize that co-workers (unless you're literally related) are NOT your family. At the end of the day, you're all resources (human capital) to a larger organization whose mission is to create value. YOU are responsible for your career and what YOU provide to these organizations who choose to hire you. Build your brand. Create multiple income streams. All will work itself out, and in every layoff, there's opportunity somewhere else. You'll find it, and you'll look back at your time at VMware as part of what made you such a valuable and skilled person to another employer.

I am the op. I’m sorry I’m using this to vent. My team thankfully all got offers to at least have the choice, though the team is torn apart has different titles and it’s all a confusing sh-t show in terms of their roles.

I built this team. They got me through a lot in my life. I just didn’t think this would happen to me.

But you guys are right. I’m sorry I’m emotional this company did become my identity and yes I have been here more than 10 years in different roles

Don't let people dismiss your feelings. It's important to go through your own process of grief and accepting change. You're not alone.

What about you, @lag+1pfTI7lC, why were you affected so heavily? Did you receive a transition offer? Layoffs can't happen without the transaction completing, so any news of the sort is potentially phishing/malicious.

Your family is your life. Your health is your life.

This is a job.

If only this was the biggest worry for our colleagues in Israel.

JFC

I can't even. I don't even know how to respond to this.

YOU HAVE NOT BEEN FIRED.

YOU STILL HAVE DAYS LEFT TO GET YOUR OFFER.

STOP PANICKING BEFORE YOU EVEN KNOW YOUR STATUS

Come back in two weeks.

You leave, you start over. Life goes on.

Your LIFE is yours to live. No company should ever become so important to you.

If you're one of those employees who spent more than a decade at VMW, you're due for a change. This is your big moment. Don't waste time with worry. Think of the upside.

I got this analogy from Netflix, they think of themselves as members on a professional sports team. Play together to win. However, it's not family meaning if a person does not perform then they leave the team, etc.

Family are people who are with you in good times and bad. When you make money you don't share with co-workers and when you have trouble, the co-workers will not give you money in most cases.

I think you may be scared of getting a comparable offer elsewhere but don't be afraid. Companies hire for roles, not for superstars, if the company could have paid you less, they would. It may take some time but you should be just fine, especially since you have worked in VMware. Talent!

Good luck, friend!

Everything happens for a reason. You may still receive and offer! And if you don't, then this could be the beginning of a new chapter in your life. Maybe you have a better opportunity where you will be surrounded by the people you love to work with and be happier. If you accept the bad happening, then you also have to accept that good may also happen. Have faith! You are valuable and there is life outside VMware. Hold strong!

What geo and team are you in? Have others in your team received letters yet?

It's in batches, and it's still Tuesday - definitely give it more time. And assume you're employed until you receive a termination letter, for that matter. Be strong and remember you will make the best of the situation, whatever it will be. Transferring internally, re-hiring, and re-applying are all in the cards. Try not to sit around on here, as trolls are rampant, too. It's not a healthy mindset they elicit.
