Thread regarding VMware layoffs

I got a letter

Hey guys,
Engineer in GSS from Cork here!

Just got an email from a broadcom email address into my personal email. Unfortunately I have been given a severance package, my last day with VMware/BC is January 1st 2024.

Thank you to everyone that's posted on here and on the slack channel with all the memes they are getting me through this hard news.

Should I have gone looking for a job sooner? Maybe but I was hopeful that my years of experience with GSS as a senior engineer would some bit save me.

I will be leaving here now. Looking to apply as much as I can on linkedin etc.

I also got a letter with the following...

  • 120% of my vmware salary
  • 3x salary in RSUs
  • a night away with Betsy and Hock, a "menage a trois"

Not sure which one I most excited about.

In other words, this thread is absolute BS.

Not true in the slightest.. you will get a consultation letter in Ireland before ever being offered severance.

It's hard to believe that one would get a severance letter from a company who is not yet your employer. If you really received the severance letter, sorry about it. Wish you good luck.

Shows how much you know. We had GSS in Cork, Burlington, Broomfield, Bangalore, now Egypt, Costa Rica etc. Even though there might have been gro office closings, there were remnants of GSS folks in those areas who were allowed Remote work. Now as to the validity of the message I have no clue.

He sounds sincere. VMware probably will lay some of us off too regardless if the deal goes through or not. This could be the case here?

They said 3 options:

  1. We stay in new company
  2. We leave same day
  3. We stay transitional period...

And they said we can expect email from 15th till 31st of October

Weren't severance letters supposed to be 100% received after October 30th (at the earliest)?

Why was the email sent on a Saturday, and is a response required for acknowledgement? If yes, by when?

Why should the last day be January 1st? Is it gardening leave until then?

Sorry I've so many questions.. if this is legit I hope someone can provide the answers.

Seems unlikely as the mandatory government consultation did not start yet so they can’t start firing people.

what was the sender's email address, so we can add the address to our spam blockers?

For some, so it's blocked
for others, so it's not blocked

Original post seems misleading.

In Countries like Ireland (labor law reasons) Broadcom can’t communicate anything without a formal close/acquisition completion.

Thank you for sharing. It’s good to know that even severance letters are being handed out now instead of waiting for October 30. Good luck.
