Thread regarding VMware layoffs

What are your plans now with China change

I’ve been here for so long. Sumit and raghu have destroyed this company before selling us to hock to bleed dry.

Talent is leaving.
The ones staying are spooked, frustrated and unable to get things done because of the morale.
Causing more people to think about leaving.

We have no strategy and the last month has destroyed this company beyond repair.

Even if it doesn’t go through there has been irreparable damage through this process of stripping the company for the leadership and PE gain.

Having said all that….what do you want to happen? Seems like severance and layoffs are going to be delayed at least a month if not much longer. Intel and tower waited 18 months.

Are you guys jumping ship asap or hanging on to see what happens ?

No need to change plans, decided last year to wait and see, still waiting and seeing...

So, approval from China is absolutely required, and there are serious repercussions if circumvention is attempted.

Interesting legal perspective from a Hong Kong-based international attorney regarding the Chinese SAMR merger/acquisition review process. In particular, "It is noteworthy that nearly all of the prohibitions, conditional approvals and abandonments over the past 10 years have occurred in the technology sectors that are important to China’s national growth, such as semiconductors, automotive/aviation, and industrial equipment and supplies." Also, Section 9 covers "What if we just don’t file or, if we run into trouble, close without Chinese approval?" Short answer is that the fines for closing before approval "can now be up to 10% of the acquirer's global turnover in the previous year" and "SAMR can, in theory, order the parties to unwind the transaction and/or revert to the status quo prior to the transaction." So, approval from China is absolutely required, and there are serious repercussions if circumvention is attempted. I've also been with VMware a long time... almost 18 years. I've been looking since the purchase was announced, but nothing really amazing has popped up so I've been waiting. I'm not too worried--there's almost always work for skilled people with a proven track record in this industry.

I'm pretty conflicted about the whole BC thing. On the one hand, if I get an offer I'll probably stick around for a while... though I've read some things that make me think BC is probably too toxic for me--I'm a keep my head down and work kind of guy and I don't do office politics. On the other hand, if they offer me severance I'll be OK with that too. I've been thinking about a change and that would definitely be the push it takes to get me to move on.

I think it’s hysterical the number of uninformed people here commenting on delays due to China. Educate yourselves folks, the deal is done and will go through. The cuts are coming and it ain’t gonna be pretty for any of us.The BC people are bracing themselves as well.

Don't get co--y re recent housing appreciation. There's plenty of signs it's rolling over, right now. Sure! You'll have a 2.9 on a house that's under water. Then you'll be left holding the bag with an administration that shows no signs of knowing how to run a healthy economy

With Korean approval the only hope is China approval getting delayed. I dam care what would happen to Vmware would be left alone as it's products and legacy customer base is still very strong ,its also not Nokia , Fujifilm or Blackberry. With $88 per share MD is still making more than $10 B, with proper restructuring he can still get $20 B in a year to six month instead of selling to BC, who would be butcher many good folks..

There is no plan change! The deal will go through on 30th as Hock mentioned several times. He is the boss and he will get it done.

Agree that it will be brutal regardless.
So jumping ship at the first opportunity. Truly loved this company but I think it will take time for it to ever get back to a semblance of its old self, if ever

I’m a people manager and I feel conflicted about leaving the severance if there is any. They said we will all get jobs and only a few managers will go back to be IC….and I can’t help but think there is opportunity in very challenging times. Like buying a house during Covid. Those 2.9 interest rate peopoe are sitting pretty.
I liken it to this as so many people are leaving there just has to be an upside for those who wait it out IMHO

If Broadcom bails out we get a delay on our future. Not for long though as VMW will need to cut costs substantially and we will have no back end funding from Broadcom to keep us afloat. If you think the merger cuts will be tough, just wait to see what happens to VMW once we’re back on our own. Dell will make sure we’re chopped to the bone and sold off piecemeal. That is going to be ugly.

I was told that I would get an BC offer from my upper management and hoped that I would get better TC under BC. But I don't actually care which company I work for.
BC and VMW have cons and pros. If we go back where we were, I'm still fine.

GS here - I think I hope the deal does not go through at all. I don't think any customers are excited about this, for starters, and the timing of this is... not great.

I plan to stick with the company as long as I am able. I like it here and I like the people I work with. And I feel like my work matters. I'm not sure where else I'd rather be.

FWIW, usually folks that leave end up saying they had no idea how much better it was outside of the company (or how bad it was within VMware). Some of that will be hyperbole and copium, but I still hope that remains the case, should it go that way.

Jumping ship. If you are even considering jumping ship, you better start looking now (should have started months ago). It is brutal out there now and it could take months with all the competition for jobs and it's only getting more competitive with each tech layoff.
