Laptops if let go

Any guesses what we will have to do with our laptops if let go. I hope we can keep them. I might take this as an opportunity to switch careers and will need something portable if I do. So it would be convenient.

Anything with an asset tag on it is very likely to be called back. You get a pre-paid label and box sent to your home address, and you pack up the laptop and power adapter, and send it off.

I believe monitors don't fall in this bucket, but it depends on where and how you got yours, maybe. Docking stations, monitors, and peripherals don't appear to be tracked.

At least this is how it has been in the NASA region.

Also, @1gdu+1patgQAp - you'll probably be fine, as that loaner may have fallen through the cracks. But just bear in mind that these systems all have remote management baked into them, and they can be soft-bricked if IT considers it stolen property.

There's already processes in place to recover company assets from remote employees post-separation. When one of my co-workers left recently, they were sent an empty pre-paid box specifically for shipping laptops back to VMware. Unless you had a BYOD device, you're expected to return everything with an asset tag.

I left VMware exactly one year ago today. I had a loaner laptop because I spilled a drink on mine. I expected to get an email by my last day of work that would tell me how to ship my laptop back. It never came. I finally called VMware tech support to ask them to send me a shipping box and label. They even opened up a support ticket and then I never heard nothing.

I'm going to bring the laptop to a local repair shop and have them wipe it, and redo it. I'm not chasing VMware to give it back.

Have you ever worked in the past? you have to give everything back, laptop , headphones, keyboard. In the system everything you have is coded and registered. This is not for you as a gift fot personal things, is for you to work. So everything you have, phone latop , keyboard, headphones,.. you need to give it back. What made you think that VMware will or any company will give you that? If you work for VMware and you can t buy a laptop you have a serious problem... wht are you doing with your money?

what are you smoking man.. Company property, if you keep it, it's stealing. Return it and buy your own gear. this is 101 ethics..

I keep getting audit emails asking me to confirm I have my laptop. That started happening this last month, so it seems like they are getting ready to pull them all back.

I told this to recent terminations, assume you have to return everything but wait for them to ask for specific items. Hold onto everything for at least a year just in case.

To be honest we won’t be keeping laptops, whereas keyboards, headset etc we will probably be allowed to keep. Don’t forget that all the vmw laptops have specific apps and programs installed for due diligence. We won’t be allowed keep em and they will probably be wiped and reused

Well they are going to have a ton of laptops to process through. Probably donate somewhere. I doubt they will hire enough people again to reissue them before the warranties are out. Also doubt they will find a buyer for all of them.

Don't speculate here. This is an established territory. They are liquidated in batches to resellers. Literally wiped by IT then stacked on a pallet and sold to electronics recyclers as a tax write-off. It's pennies on the dollar, but corporations are not going to put the time and effort into dealing with individual employees and their laptops.

This US healthcare does indeed su-k. I took leave, paid for Kaiser Bronze on the open market. $970/mo. And it was increasing at a clip of 10-15% annually. A complete joke

Spoke with a lady last night. Kaiser charged $75,000 for 3 nights, room only. Henry J Kaiser must be rolling over in his grave knowing his goal was to bring affordable healthcare to the people of the Oakland community. Such bullsh-t

You work for VMware and you can not afford a laptop then you got serious problem dude.. it’s ok to invest in yourself

Uh huh. I guess you've never supported a family with medical needs before. Yes, seriously the problems are medical debt taking all my savings because the US healthcare system su-ks.

Also, not everyone at VMware makes bank at $178k and up like the staff engineers do. $56k, enough to not qualify for help but not enough to not worry about money if you're dealt a bad hand.

It's already been clarified that you have to return the laptop, no way to keep it.

There is always a way. you just might not get your severance pay in you chose not to return it
