When I was working contract for HP, they started to furlough us to save money. There are two kinds of contractors that I worked with; highly skilled software/firmware/hardware people and lower skilled techs. Almost all of the higher skilled contractors found better jobs and left HP. A recruiter called me and interviewed me and offered me an hourly salary increase of 40%. After working for over a year, I received a 5% increase. BTW, I am writing code that emulates different kinds of silicon on chip hardware. Guess what? No more furloughs and, best of all, respect for my hard work. So, yeah, employers will pay you, IF you have skills they want.

"No surprises. The furloughs are why I left HP. There seems to be a severe shortage of talented people with my skill set so I have been making bank since leaving HP. Life is good again. "

The extra 4 days were tacked on to the HP shut down week. Not all CW's are out on those extra days. I am exempt, as well as several other CW's in other departments from the furlough. Our departments are short handed so no extra days off.

Nothing new here. Although from my observation it seems FTEs are more likely to be laid off compared to CWs. You would think it would be the other way around but I’m thinking it has something to do with the benefits FTEs get. One of the bittersweet things about being a CW I guess…
