RTO collaboration and discipline experience so far

Day 3 and so far I collaborated with:

  • Receptionist to get my Broadcom badge
  • random person 1 to ask where the washroom is
  • random person 2 to ask where the break room is

In terms of discipline,

I do zoom meetings from home since they are scheduled super early for me and we have distributed workforce.

Then middle of my work day, around the time I would have taken lunch break, I get ready and travel to office. Takes 2 hours time. I take 1 hour lunch break in office.

I work 2 hours less now. I am also less productive since I get to work less. But I got my discipline right. I sit tight in my cubicle and I don’t look here and there.

Hey, that is corporate policy and we must adhere to it.

I guess that if you don’t go to the office, you’re not at your work place. You simply get fired, no package…

I am the OP. Updating this post to let you know that today on Day 5, I had my successful 4th collaboration. With the janitor.

Hock is giving me immense opportunities to collaborate. I wouldn't have met and talked to these people otherwise

It would make much more sense if they went by average commute time (ideally) or commuting distance. Radius is so arbitrary and almost purposefully obtuse.

50 miles in CA heading to Palo Alto, depending on where you're starting, could be 3+ hours. Good luck retaining people who live in San Fran or, even worse, just north of it, there's no way I'd make that commute on a regular basis.

When I go to PA; and am staying "downtown" (Residence Inn usually), I still give myself 30 minutes to get to the campus and, what is that, about 2 miles? Yes, sometimes it's 10 minutes, but, I've had it take many times longer, especially if I'm trying to get in for a 9AM meeting.

I'm about 75 miles from the closest office, but I'm sure I could make that commute faster at rush hour than someone 25 miles from PA.

So how long does it take to get fired for not showing up to the office? Asking for a friend. 😀

Broadcom collected solid data during Covid

Solid data using pen and paper? Or perhaps with some assistance from 1990s technology..?
I mean, we're talking about Broadcom, so.. 🤔

RTO is what we call 'presenteeism' but minus the sickness part.

It helps incompetent, useless managers feel important, thus making it appear they have justification for their own role.

Otherwise known as, a Dog and Pony show.

No wonder Hock is a fan, espeically with the 'Dog' part, as he may be hungry.

"That is why they quickly moved to get people back in the office during covid."

That and other stark examples of how BC works is why I left VMW as soon as possible. Nothing shows how totally slimy a company is when they required workers to return to the office- in APRIL OF 2020, not only against state mandates but well before there were any vaccines and when people were both dying from and getting extremely sick with Covid. Literally putting money first and people's safety last.

Broadcom collected solid data during Covid which 100% showed productivity dropped drastically when everyone was working from home. That is why they quickly moved to get people back in the office during covid. People whining about going in to the office should seriously consider finding another company to work for.

Those who don't live in the Bay Area have no clue what living 20,30, 40 miles from the office means. It doesn't seem like a long distance. But its everything you run into to get there. 10 minutes just waiting to get onto an on ramp. Another 10 minutes trying to get onto a bridge. Another 10 exiting the bridge and getting onto another freeway. And so on. And when not waiting to get to something its barely moving in bumper to bumper traffic. All of that adds up. Its exhausting and for many it means they're already worn out by the time they get to the office or get home.

“You are doing it wrong. Get up, walk around, chat with co-workers. Work can wait, collaborate.“

That is - if you have a team around you to collaborate right? How much will you collaborate with random teams who you don’t work with? If I have to do that, I rather meet with friends after office. Is Hock trying to have us collaborate or have us socialize and make friends here?

Nobody is forcing you to go to the office. This isn’t slavery
  • Cohersive Control
  • Domination
  • Disrespective
  • Demeaning

Sum up correspondence thus far post acquisition.

The nodding "YES" hierarchical midsetted individuals, love this atmosphere, but it's all a front.

There are many studies on this.

Trust and WLB really do go a further from a productivity stand point.

Fascism........

It takes you two hours to get to the office and you live within 50 miles?
I’m calling bullsheet unless you’re riding a bicycle.

Livermore is within 50 miles from Palo Alto.... as the crow flies.
But there are many bottlenecks such as bridges. 2 hours, easy, during drive time.

Fremont is much closer than that, but 90 minutes is a good time during drive time Drive north to get to a bridge, then drive south to get to Palo Alto.

The company said I work in the office.
Ok.

That means I cannot work from home.
Ok.

No extra work from home or the weekends, then.
You've lost a lot of free labor from people who like what they do.
