Assume the people here telling you to volunteer are trolling or work for the company. Unemployment is funded almost entirely through taxes paid by employers. If they can show you left voluntarily they can fight your ability to receive unemployment benefits and voila no hit to them.

Do NOT!!! volunteer.

Post ID: @gzd+1pUXCaGw That is very bad advise. Almost bordering on wanting to set employees up to get screwed.

When a company is trying to save move the highest paying employees are on top of the list to be considered. This has nothing to do with their worth in pay. So some people that were on the top of the pay scale were layed off. Just makes sense. May not be fair, but that’s Buisness.

You should definitely volunteer to be laid off. They'll appreciate you for stepping forward. Don't see any downsides to it tbh. Go for it!

@Anonymous, so you’re rationalizing that those who were let go were overpaid and that’s why they were, what, chosen? That’s utterly ridiculous. If an IC or Manager, Director or VP, is overpaid, what’s your basis for that opinion? That they weren’t long tenured employees with significant responsibilities? Get a grip and stop posturing that they were taking advantage of anything or deserved to lose their livelihood.

You certainly SHOULD volunteer to be laid off. Nothing bad will happen if you do. They’ll appreciate you coming forward

“The company laid off what was left of their best employees” that is quite insulting to say.
Yes, granted there were some great employees that were layed off. However the employees that were let go, the majority were just overpaid. There are still some incredibly talented and hard working individuals at 2U!

Absolutely not. DO NOT volunteer to be laid off. Ever.

You’ll be lucky if there even is a severance package moving forward. The company laid off what was left of their best employees, who hadn’t left voluntarily, in the last round of layoffs.

The company is broke. It’s not even a matter of “caring” or “doing the right thing”. Sadly, being laid off already would’ve been the best thing to happen to anyone.

Do not volunteer!!! Worst case scenario, at least you’ll be eligible for unemployment if not offered severance.

2U is such a joke that its employees are begging and praying to be let go!

If there wasn’t so much to lose, I would definitely volunteer to be layoff with a severance package. Hoping the company does the right thing.

You can find the other thread here https://www.thelayoff.com/t/1pAYFKdb

I also hope that if there is a layoff, and they will that they take care of the employees consistent with the last layed off employees. Especially those who’ve been with this company for many years. My biggest fear is that after 11 plus years the company goes bankrupt and I not only walk away with my already $ 27,000 stock loss ( based on what I contributed to buy stocks) but also with no severance package.

Do NOT volunteer until you look up the risk to unemployment benefits in your state or region. You can hint or point out why you think you'll be laid off, but if you volunteer or make it clear you're willing to be laid off you not only risk the severance package but but possibly your ability to collect unemployment as it's seen as voluntary separation. Someone posted a link about it on another voluntary thread here.
