Thread regarding Macy's Inc. layoffs

Volunteering or getting paid

I’m wondering if anyone can honestly answer this question. When I have volunteered my time to, example Ronald McDonald house I was not able to clock in and my schedule was changed to reflect that I wouldn’t be paid for going. But it seems that when the visual captains do anything like decorating the Ronald McDonald hose they came to work and clocked in and left. Which was is it supposed to be? Do you get paid while volunteering?

This is Macys . A company of extremely WELL compensated senior executives , who think up, promote and demand volunteer service of their employees. It makes the company look good and does provide great service. The volunteer work is great…but doesn’t reflect on you as an individual…..it’s Macys the company who gets great press for it. The company is volunteering their paid staff to lend their expertise and service to a charitable cause. You should be paid…….otherwise your volunteer hours are being done just by you as an individual……and should not be credited to Macys as a benevolent company. The company is volunteering their staff to work at a charity instead of being on the selling /support floor that day.

How do you decorate a hose? With garland? Lights?

I love the people getting all sanctimonious about how volunteer work isn't meant to be paid when it's clear that standards/policies are not being applied evenly.

6 years volunteering for various events I've gotten paid for the hours & mileage.
That's just the way it's been and I've worked 2 different stores. And yes the hours do get input in partners in time.

IT'S VOLUNTEERING! If there were colleagues that were working that day, they would have needed to clock out. AND as for mileage to a volunteer event, that is not permitted. The time spent volunteering needs to be entered into the store's "GIVE BACK" / "PARTNERS IN TIME" hours.

It “seems” they get paid?

VOLUNTEER: a person who voluntarily offers to perform a service or other undertaking. · a person who performs a service willingly and without pay.
