Thread regarding VMware layoffs

People with full time offers and WFH

Just curious how those of you with full time offers AND WFH designations (due to office proximity) are feeling about the acquisition?

I’m definitely getting the sense that there are two camps forming within VMware:

The unlucky RTO camp

And

The lucky WFH camp

Hock knows there are 3 others in your team willing to do exactly what he asks for. More power for ones who stick around. Human nature.

I'm full-time remote and I'm getting the fu-k out asap. I have zero confidence that I'm safe staying remote

He also made clear that all BC employees will get industry leading annual RSU grants which was not the case in VMW before.

Unless you’re EUC, in which case you get nothing. Maybe our next company when ET get sold odd in Feb will give us some.

walking on water isn't hard as long as it is not too deep.

Are the WFH folks really lucky? They might end up on the chopping block before RTO folks.

Some of us WFH people didn't get the option to take a layoff. I would feel lucky if I could get a layoff package right now. I would have gladly taken a package including a bunch of pay and accelerated RSU instead of working for this sh---y company.

Go to a pond or a beach, try walk on the water. If you can not, you will be gone in the next round of layoff.

Hock made it clear in his coffee talk in VMW HO meet in Palo Alto. He wants all employees in office for collaboration efficiency and discipline except for customer facing positions (eg Sales) who may still work at home and customer site respectively. He also made clear that all BC employees will get industry leading annual RSU grants which was not the case in VMW before. BC is a strongly engineering driven company and in all fairness the engineers also have received much higher RSU grants than customer facing positions in BC. I know of engineers getting 600 RSU as new hire grants. Do the math yourself. In this context the new regime seems like a fair trade off. Take it or leave it.

Not going to quit without the severance package. Work at the office will be slower and not efficient. I get a lot d-mber in the office and not very self sufficient. Will need some help doing a lot of things. Intentional without looking intentional. I think I will be able to get laid off before the 18 month expiration of the VMware severance package.

In fact I’ve seen a good chunk of people in my office get laid off leaving
cubes empty while WFH employees remained.

What does that mean?

Because they are supposed to be in the office, and just don't show up?
Are the cubes empty because they went to the bathroom? Went to lunch? Took a break?

Is attendance / butts-in-seats more important than actually producing things of value?

As a Broadcom employee i have not seen any evidence whatsoever that people who work from home are more at risk of being laid off than office employees.

I wonder if we are going to see a lot of people just outright quit.
Has HT overplayed his authoritarian hand on this one?

The only people who CAN quit are not on work visas.
Seriously, what % of the company do you thinnk that is now?
Do you think that would actually have an impact?

Will WFH be at risk of future layoffs? No BC offices around my area.
