Thread regarding VMware layoffs

Broadcom is not as bad as everyone is making it out to be

Only 1 week in, but so far, this is clearly a much better run company than VMware ever was, and I have been at VMware for 15+ years.

Everyone I have met who has survived the Symantec and CA acquisitions is incredibly happy, says they have nothing to complain about, and have unwavering trust in the CEO.

What I'm seeing as the catch is, that you have to be lucky enough to survive. Also you have to be one of those people that knows how to focus on making money, does not mind working hard and efficiently, and could care less about silly corporate frills, like breakfast burrito Tuesdays, and Train concerts.

VMware leadership was obsessed with itself and thought a Silicon Valley utopia, with lots of fluffy perks, hugs, and political statements, was where everyone wanted to work. The truth is, it was all a distraction from what mattered, not to mention huge portions of the company never benefited from most of these programs.

Goodbye VMware, hello Broadcom! I hope I'm lucky enough to survive.

Thought this website was for layoffs? As in about and for the people laid off.

well i consider myself lucky enough to get a termination letter and get off the train at the last stop before the trainwreck happened.

Good Luck, i was there 12+ years, the world outside is looking more and more attractive the more my SMS messages from existing employees blows up.

Sorry to say, but there are good people on both sides, i am just happy i'm gone and happy you are happy to stay.

You haven’t even experienced a week under his leadership. Why do you call it a sweatshop? In fact, I said the exact same ‘sweatshop’ comment when we were acquired. Boy, how wrong I was. Nothing changed in terms of work from before and after. Far less red tape and no BS environment which I greatly appreciate. I’m not trying to convince you. You do you. Just something that I and many of my colleagues felt the same way at the start.

You didn't survive. You got su-ked into the sweat shop. I'm getting 5 months pay plus accelerated stock vesting and I have an offer to go to a competitor that values me.

"Broadcom is not as bad as everyone is making it out to be"

If you are a skilled and experienced enterprise software developer, then it is very bad.

Granted, if you are one of the leftovers at CA or Symantec, I understand your low bar of expectation for what qualifies as Leadership of a software vendor. But I want more than merely working on bug fixes and security updates, while HT raises all customer prices.

You can buy your own burritos with the mountain of RSUs you now have.

That is because when they were acquiring you all, you were not making profits and AVGO was 200 - 300’s for us it has to go to 2000 to see you kind of money and we were profitable, besides, one of our problems was Dell using us like a piggy bank. Good CEO could have been hired.

"how could you possibly know all of this and put your trust in people you barely know after just one week?" It is called taking a survey. You dont just take one persons word for it. You look for consensus. Duh!

I've been here longer than that, and I endorse this statement.

I have never seen such a large group of unqualified chuckleheads running a company the size of vmware before. And their inablity to actually do anything right has led precisely to where we are now. They should all be run out of town, but for some unknown reason, BC has left the very worst offenders in charge of the new vmware units.

You have to understand Hock's background. He is a MIT mechanical engineer grad. He was in private equity, been a CEO to a lesser known chip company, worked in GM and Pepsi before. He is driven for sure and he wants to run with like mind people.

So, he pays more to surround himself with people like him. You can question his way of running business but he has the financial result to show for. This is a record of 18 years.

"They said that about Pat and he invented annual layoffs."

Pat's popularity was overstated to say the least. VMware could have been much more than it was, and Pat was the one of the main reasons we were acquired.

Disagree. BC shutdown both the cloud providers slack instance and the vExpert slack today with no warning. While it may not matter to those in the commercial space, the cloud provider slack was used for both marketing and to help our providers with our products. They basically kicked 10k+ people (mostly customers) out of our slack instances for help with no warning at all. How to pi-s off half your customers in less than 10 days.
