Thread regarding Staples Inc. layoffs

Got locked out of the Staples system this AM

I tried logging into Staples system this AM ( 28 Nov 2023) but got locked out. Is this an IT issue? Hope they did not fire me silently overnight.

Anyone else facing this issue?

Staples is one big happy team and family until you point out the fact that this “team” is only asking for a small portion of employees to come back in office. Aside from the office assistant who I’m not even sure has to be in office daily and the person that assists with tech issues no one works at that Rochester center and the one in Halifax was due to shut down. All of that while the rest of the employees stay home with pay because they didn’t require them to live near an office when they were hired. With the exception of management we are all being paid the same in a similar fashion. If you don’t see the issue with that then you can’t see.

This is an abnomaly. All locations are being requested to come in. Just do it. WFH jobs are starting to become obsolete.

My car is broken down, I don’t have consistent transportation and Ubering isn’t an option nor is inconveniencing those closest to me. I told that to my manager and I’m playing it by ear. the idea that Rochester and Halifax people are asked to be the sacrificial lambs is ridiculous but this kind of stuff is on brand for staples.

Yeah I talked to my manger about how far I am away and how it’s not really possible for me to get to the centre to work and she told me she would communicate that with the higher ups and advised I would still get paid and to just keep checking the absent line. There’s gotta be some laws to protect us from being fired thru all this cr-p

Where did it say we’d be fired? Thats nowhere. Not everyone lives near a center

It’s not like it’s just go into the office. It’s bring your PC, keyboard, mouse, both massive monitors and all cables. They should be prepared with at least monitors and cables. It’s Staples for goodness sake! This is getting a little ridiculous and the amazing company I thought I worked for is starting to show it’s true colors.

Our kind and generous Minion VP and lynchperson for Gruel JL said if you can’t come in to office you will be fired. Wonder if that applies to this self induced system debacle?

I live in the Rochester area, but I have been remote for years and don’t have consistent transportation. I communicated this to my manager who was no help and directed me to the attendance line. I’m only still here bcuz of the wfh aspect, based on pay alone this job isn’t worth any kind of commute

Yeah they want people in Halifax to come into the centre but some of us don’t live close to the centre yeah I’m in the same province but i am not close to the centre. According to my manager I am still expected to go in, that is not what I signed up for it is not as simple as just come into the centre just because we live in the same province, there’s also child care to think of. I was asked to come into the office Monday afternoon ON Monday afternoon, now I’m expected to go tomorrow, I have made it clear to my manager that, that just might not be possible I have more than distance of travel to think about. I mean the recording does say those who live in Halifax go into the centre, well I don’t live in Halifax or the HRM so how does that include me?!

Why can’t they just say we got hacked plain in simple? all I cared about is that they didn’t get my SSN! Multi billion dollar company and they can’t even invest in itself lol this company is a joke! It’s always a system issue or the conveyor belt breaking!

I guess they still have the Halifax location until January. I have friends out there who are being asked to come in.

Halifax I thought they shut that train wreck center down. At least you have Maitland until they unionize can’t wait to watch that group rise up. Too bad BB strategy to elevate Texas backfired with his firing months ago. Ineffective leader and a bigger bully than JL. BB destroyed inside sales and the mid market growth engine that RG built up.

Basically the email says to report to the Halifax or Rochester office with your equipment to work as they are still having issues with remote work. If you can't report to an office to continue to check the attendance line for updates.

Does anyone know what is going on right now? Absent line tells us to check out outlook for an email but me and few others I know can not get access to outlook we get a pop up saying our sign in was successful but that it’s restricted so not sure how we are supposed to see that email they are talking about

To the person who wrote the previous post (Post ID @5dew+1pO4jN1i), where did you receive this update, and did they mention specifically if the VPN would be fixed? The last update I had received via email said the VPN was still down, and the next update regarding it would be given tomorrow at 9AM EST.

Staples is a sinking ship taking Quill and its other brands down with it. QUILL was a great company brought to ruins over the sale to Staples. Mismanagement, unreasonable EBITA, infiltrated with an off balance of SLT to minion ratio. Staples trying to become a global brand, attempt at a hostile take over of Office Depot, not understanding the dynamics of European purchasing dynamics. Wonder how that multimillion dollar contract they signed with Omni, whatever contract, is going to prosper over this breach.

I received an email to my personal email from staples. Not too much information but there is a doc attached more info. It seems like they are saying the cause of this was due to someone falling of a phishing email.

Only “updates” I’ve been getting is when I call out absent line for customer service today they’ve been making us call every 2 hours but yet it’s just the same msg every time like clearly it’s not going to be done today so just do what you did yesterday and tell us see ya Monday cause this is ridiculous. No communication from my department AT ALL. I did read a new article yesterday that staples confirmed it is a cyber attack but that’s it. My scheduled shift for today is almost over now anyways so guess I’ll just find out what happening come Monday morning

Any update yet on restoration?? Other than the half baked email from JL, we know nothing. Wonder what’s actually going on.

Christmas Bonuses? - Staples can't even get a bank loan and the big one is coming due next year. They just laid off over 500 people for the holidays to get their SLT bonuses. Systems are barely functioning, Grinch JL should ask IT to send some more phishing training, Happy Holidays!

Has anybody received any legitimate updates on status of the system coming fully back online? as of 6:20 AM my VPN is still unavailable. Was told yesterday they thought people with Macs would have access restored by yesterday afternoon, and that all remote workers/contractors would be able to access the system this morning. Doesn’t appear to be the case yet and for our offshore folks half of their day is already over just a crazy week here in the lack of communication is so so frustrating

Curious if anyone experienced personal breaches. I just got a fraudulent bank charge and my wife’s phone is blowing up with robocalls every few minutes. May not be Staples related but seems too coincidental. Anyone else notice anything personally?

Desktop Email/outlook is back. And finally , we get that email from the Nasty, Grumpy CEO of SBA (Lederer) indicating this was an actual hacking attempt . Seems like our IT folks were running around like headless chicken not knowing what to do.

All that chatter about pulling the plug on our own systems to protect data, looks like BS to me . No big investments were made in IT infrastructure in the recent past, we have outdated archaic systems and we became sitting ducks for a cyber security mishap.

After this episode, I am convinced Lederer is on a mission to drive this company into the ground. Keep in mind, he works for Sycamore and is loyal only to Stefan and Co, so he cares two hoots about employees. Time to get off this ship and look for greener shores.

FCs are back up running today with limited orders - mostly from 11/28, some from 11/29. Some Office products coming back online this evening. Should be normal orders for tomorrow as more systems come back online. Orders are capped to allow adequate time for shipping out same day. Should all be caught up be week. I would expect normalcy to return by next Monday.
