Thread regarding Northwestern Mutual layoffs

Warning Signs

Open forum to post your NM warning signs.

  1. ) NM's dividend (5.1%) is now lower than Mass Mutual (6.15%)
  2. ) NM dropped out of the Fortune 100 and Mass Mutual moved into their spot.
  3. ) Still no 401k match. Is the company strapped for cash?
  4. ) No cash to give any kind of merit increase consistent with inflation.
  5. ) Laying off hundreds of people.
  6. ) Senior leaders fleeing or being fired.
  7. ) Out of control and unstable members of DEI and WIT.
  8. ) Grown adults taking selfies with llamas and being promoted to senior positions.
  9. ) Spending $500M on a building when you already have another campus to use.
  10. ) Sponsoring a bunch of millionaire baseball players when the company allegedly doesn't have enough money to replace laptops or headsets.

Call hold times for tech support exceeding an hour or get help "quicker" via chat but not before you wait behind two dozen people. The Field business partners and employees deserve better.

But keep laying off more support staff. Could've at least had the outsourced/offshore infrastructure ready to go. Or is this all part of SR's master plan?

Yes, once you reach midpoint in your salary, the only way for it to go up is either if the company does a market rate increase (rare if ever) or if you get an Exceptional or Highly Successful rating, which is usually <20% of employees a year across NM.

Not only is AIP not guaranteed, the bonus+salary still doesn't get most people even into the upper half of their salary ranges. AIP is more of a supplement.

Also - feel free to adjust the salary ranges to be a bit more in good faith. There need not be an extra 30% salary above a 100 compa ratio if it's just there for show and no one can actually earn it.

AIP is not guaranteed. One thing that is almost guaranteed is that a 401k return is going to be higher than a cash balance account return. NM should know this and support their employees.

Aside from one year during the recession, our AIP has paid more than target every year based on company metrics. But more importantly, if you want to leave for a 1% higher target, the great thing is that you are free to do so.

According to Indeed the average AIP is 11% in the US. NM tops out at 10% for P3 employees. They fall short yet again.,

NM pays us a very high percentage of AIP. The AIP % is much higher than other companies out here.

More "NM has competitive pay" talk today in The Weekend.

Not being able to get above the defined salary mindpoint isn't competitive. 3% raises for top performers isn't competitive. Refraining from cost of living increases isn't competitive. Not matching 401k isn't competitive. Forcing employees into the office when they can be just as productive at home isn't competive.

I like my job and enjoy the work that I do, but there's nothing competitive about my compensation.

@klfp+1pH9ENSu - you fail to understand WHY they are refacing the North building.
Largest layoff / displacements - really? 2015-2019 & what about all the early retirements when they stopped the health insurance benefit for retiree's. That temporarily saved a lot of jobs from layoff.

Looking at other insurance companies on this site there is very little (mass or nyl, pacific life). I’m sure Human Resources dislikes this site though it is comedy gold. The workers at NM are transparent.

CEO of the year at the same time, the company is spending over $500 million to reglass a building when surveyed employees say no one wants to come back to the office (hybrid). The company falls out of the fortune top 100, now we’re seeing the largest layoffs/displacements in the companies 165+ years history.

Anymore headwinds that I’m missing? CEO of the year is a stretch.

My sentiments exactly. WIT is terrible. Men solve problems and women create them. When will this company learn!!

Post ID: @gnbn+1pH9ENSu

WIT and Sangeeta say how much they help NM but all they do is spread hate and make up problems when none exist. Take a look at the presenters and attendees of the WIT conference. There isn't a single person worth keeping and the company would be further ahead and better off if their employment ended. No one involved with cult that adds any kind of value whatsoever. When will senior leaders wake up to this.

  1. ) WIT and the WIT Conference. It is disappointing the company continues to sponsor such an angry and mean spirited group on inept individuals. This group continues to play the victim role and blame others for their inadequacies and failures. Their delusional leader continues to drain millions from the company while weak-minded sheep continue to carryout her demands to promote division and toxic behavior throughout the company. SR can't seem to function unless their is controversy and fighting. She and her followers would make great candidates for layoffs next year.

I think NM has been behind Mass Mutual in dividends since 2008 and in 2018 NMs dividend went to 4.9%. I changed careers about 6 years ago to supply chain management and the company I currently work for (SC Johnson) drank the same cool aid as NM. Their goals are to layoff works, get people to retire early, and contract out as many jobs as possible. Neither company is really interested in investing in employees and care more about their pet projects. For SC Johnson it's about spending millions on 2 wind turbines and some solar panels in the Racine area.

I think NMs dividend has been lower than Mass Mutual since 2008 and even went to 4.9 in 2018. I made a career change from IT to supply change management six years ago and the company I currently work for has offshored almost 100 percent of it's IT department. Everyone dreads calling the help desk and it takes forever to get anything fixed. NM is dying a slow death like the company I'm currently with. Once JES is gone, I hope someone can revive this once great company.

DR got knocked off of the silver singles 100 just like Northwestern Mutual got knocked off of Forbes 100. Maybe if we invest more in his make up, the company would go back into the Forbes 100.

We saw DR emerge from his south building cove yelled 6 more weeks of layoffs then quickly retreated.

Joking aside he looked rather in rough shape, looking as if he aged more than a president.

How does the esd all hands have technical audio issues literally every single time since DG has lead it? Makes one wonder if he's doing it on purpose to speak to NY first.

  1. DG's newly announced VP of Engineering is, once again, fully remote, and another USAA cronie. The org chart shows that 6 of his direct reports are now remote employees as senior leaders.

After the 12/16 reorg takes effect the majority of his leadership team will be remote. But it is super important that we all come into the office for collaboration and connections that just can't happen any other way. We have an aggressive roadmap after all!

Perfect as we get ready to have the in office expectations ramped up to 4 days a week.

JES was quoted as saying he wants to open a pharmacy or restaurant in the New North. NM is so desperate now that they are getting into the pharmacy and food business to make ends meet. Really? The grocery store in 777 worked out so well lets make that same mistake again.

Our department HR spent 100k renting out a bar on 3rd street with our partners ESD celebrating a release of the DCs Total Rewards earlier this month. Didn’t receive your total rewards statement this year? 9 months late over 1m spent for vaporware. EE was asked why are you having the party the PMs (MO /EI) response, it had been booked already. There is no delivery date on the project. EE headed by MD/BG can spend money and not deliver anything besides for words. Time for change!

I'm glad my policyholder dollars are being spent on office space for people that don't work at Northwestern Mutual. Does JES plan on giving MassMutual or MetLife free office space in the new building? This guy has lost his mind.

  1. DH being promoted from M2 to now VP under DG within only a few years, solely because of her work with WIT, to lead the new FSE division. DH is also known for only promoting other women to leadership roles and letting women on her teams easily get WFH exemptions.
