It's a different world now. Five companies make up the majority of HDD customers, and they don't agree on much. Unlike the OEMs from Conner's world who aligned on standards and features in order to make all the various HDD manufacturers interchangeable. Hyperscalers have reduced HDDs to their least common denominator - differentiation is viewed as a negative. There are ways to respond, but the HDD industry doesn't have the leadership to figure it out much less act on it.

What he fails to understand that HDD market is only the hyperscalers. HDD manufacturers do not control their future, it is the handful of these clients who do. And they will simply use their leverage to get what they want at the price they want.
