Don’t let this bring you down!!

No matter if you get laid off, you must keep fighting!! A job is never worth giving up your life, this is just a blip on your timeline, your story is isn’t over. I know most have seen the news of the su----e at the round rock office, I wish this person knew that they were loved before this happened.

If you get laid off take some time off for yourself, do things and go places you had put off because of work. The job search can seem intimidating, but there are resources to help you I promise!! What if there’s a new job waiting for you that pays you more or values you more??? DO NOT GIVE UP!!!! And for those still at Dell, don’t let this get you down. You have to continue pushing for greatness, the best is yet to come!!!! STAY STRONG!!!!! YOU ARE LOVED!!!!!!!

Only a fool would think dell is responsible.Layoffs have gone on forever. This was a unfortunate and misguided individual. He could have involved others if the moon was in a different phase

I hope the family goes after dell and MD for this. The leadership and culture at Dell is terrible. I’m not surprised this happened.

Ex Dell here- the reality is there’s a blatant system of favoritism that overrides everything. There’s a while group of VPs who somehow managed to keep climbing the ladder with ordinary skills (nothing stellar except staying power) and they somehow manage to stay employed and take care of their own inner circle. I get that every company needs operations, training and CX focused teams etc, but seems to me there’s a lot of dead weight somehow still holding on that do not have a measurable impact on revenue. When the business is in a downturn, it’s baffling to see experienced sellers, service professionals and engineers that DIRECTLY support customers and drive revenue are getting slashed- while these non-essential roles and teams (fluff positions) remain intact. But again, they’re part of the “inner circle” and continue to remain employed. It’s across the board from the legacy Dell ranks and the EMC teams. Talk about poor leadership at the top? That’s where the buck stops. It’s not the same company and a great place to work anymore. The ship is sinking, fast.

To the person who said merger...FYI it's been a while Dell bought EMC, it wasn't a merger.

This really su-ks to see someone in such distress.

Consolidating two cultures has proved challenging. EMC loved in office car salesmanship, Dell like virtual CTB. Both do nothing to improve sales.

The new college to Field in 24 months is a hEMC deal and will ultimately fail with a portfolio this big.

Dell Technologies is a pretty interesting proposition but it has more planes and angles than a high school geometry class.

Regardless if you knelt at the alter of Joe or Michael, if you missed the road signs it su-ks.

@2nkd+1p7Mhqge Agreed. I was at EMC 3 years, then Dell 10, then EMC again (yes, I'm a slow learner) for 3 years and never experienced the stack ranking and other nonsense Dell practiced in the past and apparently still does today.

No clue why people think any of this has to do will EMC management. EMC never had stack ranking, we never had spans and layers and we never had comp ratios that had to be met before a promotion. That’s all Dell HR. Another interesting fact, I was at EMC for about 12 years before the merger. I’ve had to lay off more people at Dell in the past 3 years than all my tenure at EMC combined.

To me, Dell is just a paycheck.

And it is the most ethical company. WOW. A lot of clueless and lying managers, directors and VPs. Maybe Michael Dell is a descent person. But he allows all these stupid people to run the company to ground and allow hardworking people to get fired when these stupid management people become fat cats. Shameful.

Looks like that email was sent only to Austin staff and not the rest of Dell.

What’s sadder is that it hasn’t been mentioned by any local news stations. A New Zealand news organization posted about this. If you Google you get results on Reddit and other pages, but no local ABC, CBS, Fox, NBC stations reporting on it.

The sad part about all this is the employee thinks if he gives up his life, these Dir and VPs will feel bad. They dont care. They will still go on their vacation this year and celebrate.
These are the guys the fake input in the coaching plan update and lie about it.
These people with no values or ethics are the ones incharge .
We shouldnt expect even basic human courtesy from them.
Why honor them by sacrificing our lives for their incompetency.
They are failures.

@1bfe+1p7Mhqge, yep, been there, done that. It's insane. You HAVE to put 10% of the staff on either a coaching plan or a PIP, you as a manager have no choice. Then the upper mgmt (directors and above) decides. Toxic is just the middle name.

The substandard managers at the top layer are elated at the stack ranking. These few EMC veterans have one more tool to take revenge on employees for breathing too hard .
Now these managers can run their concentration camp with more support from Dell HR policy of stack ranking.

This is also known as “rank and yank”. This was a technique used by Enron in the late 90’s before the implosion. Anyone who takes lessons on how to run a company from Enron is cashing out their options and screwing over the employees.

Ex-Dell here. If this is true - then Dell has gone back to the old Stack Ranking process we had in the early 2000's. At that time you were rated 1-5. 10% of the team could be a 1, 20% a 2, 40% a 3 (which was considered "meets expectations"), 20% a 4, and 10% a 5. As a manager you were not allowed to vary these percentages and you had to place people in each category (not sure what happened if you had a smaller team than 5 people). So no matter how good your people were, someone had to end up as a 5. Everyone, IC's and managers alike, hated the system. HR eventually got rid of it, but sounds like it has come back to life.

I left Dell last year after 12 years with the company. while there are aspects (mostly the people) that I miss. I don't miss the insane work-life misalignment that I experienced. Although the grass isn't always greener on the other side, sometimes, you just need a change.

When you start to feel defeated go do something else and hopefully productive in some regard. Go for a walk or a workout. Start to make time in your life to play golf, play guitar, ride your bike, or whatever you are into. Above all: make it a point to spend time with family and friends.

Make all of these things a priority even if it means less time working. Do it even if you fear your boss might frown upon it. As you have seen they’ll cut you no matter how much you sacrifice. The irony is if you make the time to look after yourself you will be a better, more productive employee.

I don't know. I've been with the company for 7 years now. My current manager is fine, but there feels to be a lack of direction and enthusiasm for the work we are doing. I see peers who are really struggling. I've noticed a culture shift and not for the better. I think people are afraid, overwhelmed, near despair. I can't explain how or why, but things have changed.. we've had layoffs before, but for whatever reason, this time feels different and I worry the damage is irreparable . Anyone else relate?

Dell denies everything that happened if it violates its policies.
Even when the manager manufactures data to support wfr for an employee, his VP fully knows that employee is being positioned. Especially when the employee is deemed very good and set in growth path in the performance review , just a week ago.
People are silent to everything that is happening.
Concept of fairness doesnt exist.
Blatant coverup.
I wish more power to Dell. Obviously they believe if they coverup and quash evidence or bad news, then it didnt happen.
If you interview outside, companies prefer someone who doesnt bring " dell culture".

@wjh+1p7Mhqge Unfortunately it's a hard situation for Dell to address. The person who took his life was part of the August WFR and not a current employee. However it happened on company property. I don't know how often "copycat" future events happen related to s* but if more layoffs happen, I can understand not bringing attention to it.
