In a significant reduction of staff, ABB's Robotics and Discrete Automation division, previously operating as B&R Automation, has implemented substantial layoffs in the United States. This overhaul is reportedly a response to a considerable 30% decline in comparable orders, as per ABB's Q1 2024 financial results.

The workforce reduction affected more than 20 employees, which is a significant proportion of the countries approximate 230-strong team. The layoffs were widespread, impacting various roles and levels within the organization. Additionally, there were voluntary resignations from staff of the US-based product management team.

In an effort to compensate for the depletion of the frontline sales team, several technical application engineers are being transitioned into sales-facing roles. Understandably, this reshuffling has had an adverse effect on staff morale.

This development underscores the challenges faced by ABB's Robotics and Discrete Automation division and the strategic decisions being made to navigate.
