Thread regarding Qualcomm Inc. layoffs

What are the options for impacted H1Bs?

I am one of the H1B visa holders who got impacted today in San Diego with 12 years at Qualcomm. What options do I have? I bought a house last year and have kids here in school. Please be respectful in your comments as I am very stressed right now and could use some encouragement. I didn’t expect this was coming and I was one of the major contributors in my team. Also surprisingly our team don’t have many Indians, so I thought based on my performance and diversity, I should have been very safe.

Thanks

For reference, 1bed 600sf $900-1200, 950sf $1400-$1750, 2bed 900sf $1500-1900, 1300sf $1700-2200. Anything above range is monopoly, bubble and artificial.

@6eqx, yo, those apartment complex are charging 40% more rents compared to 2022. Dont fall for low deposit. Surprised? That's fact! They are bloodsuckers. Individual owner are also being bloodsuckers lately and they will regret it in a year.

Makes sense, it’s only a temporary work visa so at some point the temporary visa holder will have to go back to his country

@2ncn,
Search about manufacturer discounts, learn about holdback and you can easily go below invoice price for dealer.
Listed home prices and rents are artificially high, do not get satisfied with 10-20% reduction. Dig historical data and understand complete picture. You can save crazy amount of money.
Pay max 500$ in deposit. Do not pay 1 month rent as deposit. Banks pay 5% interest and most of apartment complex ask for small deposit. Shop around in market for deals when your rental lease is over.

Another sizable advantage of having temporary work visa employees From India is they can contribute to setup and maintain outsourcing divisions with India better than locals due to technical/cultural/language/time zones/communication barriers and by working around the clock

Advantages of having temporary work visa based workforce is:

The workforce will never sue the company
The workforce will work tirelessly and faithfully, by fear of being deported
The workforce won’t jump ship and therefore will keep the IP intact

America has enough talent now. It doesn’t make sense to bring people with BS/BE/BTECH degrees from India. People who invest in the US and study in the US for Masters should given a preference. Today 6+ years experienced Masters Indian professional from a US university is given less preference than 6+ years experienced B* professional directly coming from India. Unfair! Of course this is not a forum to talk about it, but whewww…

Most Indians get admitted to master programs in the U.S. with a degree that is not equivalent to a U.S. engineering degree. They get in with a Bachelor in Technology degree. If U.S. colleges made Indian international students follow the same admission criteria as U S. students then most would not be able to use their B.Tech degrees to go directly to masters programs, the starting point for H1-B.

Other countries send students with real engineering degrees, Indians send technologist degrees.

3/4 of H1Bs are from one country: is it a fair representation of American melting pot?

@5ekh, clearly you also worked on h1b visa. Unless you are ""native american"", you or your ancestors were immigrant.

By definition, H1B program is a temporary work visa; so it is only natural that at some
point the alien goes back to his own country to seek employment, and leaves
so sought-after high paying American jobs in Southern California to native Americans.

@3fnj+1p3OuAhR is the most stupid person on this forum, posting multiple times to GTFO. Remember that having H1B is much better for US economy than offshoring the jobs to Asia. Do the math on how much an H1B visa holders pays in taxes compared to all the illegals from the southern border or the guy taking your job from India!

H1B visa is a scam of the century. To avoid slaves like OP, H1Bs should be either directly sent back to their home country after 6 years or should be granted PR based on merit. H1Bs should never replace “capable” Americans. The jobs are already getting offshored and hence H1Bs are not even needed.

For other h1s, live and buy well below your means, share room if you can. Bargain heavily for car, house and rent. Always pay below asking. Ignore vile comments on this forum. Work hard during office hours, enjoy life off work. Keep and dress well.

Non-h1s can follow as well.

You should have not bought the house on an h1b. You made a big risky bet and you lost bigly.

This is a good opportunity to consider going back to india.

Big companies like Qualcomm, Microsoft, google etc pay hundred of millions of dollars to Washington DC lobbyists to make sure politicians get their share of the pie so that H1B program survive and actually grows their quota every year; America isn’t really a democracy anymore ; maybe it never was…

OP: Don’t feel bad. You are on H1B visa, which is a temporary work visa. You shouldn’t consider America as your home, doesn’t matter how long you have stayed here. You should have planned better by making up your mind to leave this country at any moment. Now that moment has come. So chin up, don’t give up. Going back to your home country can’t ve that bad! Good luck.👍🏻

There are very successful tech companies that replace successful America-based engineering managers by cheaper H1Bs brought over from India in order to grow and develop the outsourced teams located
overseas.
The new hungrier, cheaper appointee manager can help better than the previous America-based manager with technical/language/cultural/time zone barriers. And eventually the entire team can be outsourced. In capitalism, companies are in for the profit and can do pretty much whatever they want, if there’s no unions.
It seems that Qualcomm is on that cost cutting path.

Don’t kid yourself.
Talent is overrated; anybody can be replaced by a team of engineers from a low cost area.
The rest of the industry is doing the same
