We'll have a couple more sleepless nights as they wrap this up and then we can get back to business as usual. The anticipation was the worst part for me, to be honest. Just constantly having to worry about whether tomorrow is the day can't be healthy for any of us.

How are layoffs considered a stick to get more work done out of employees? If nothing else, impending layoff announcements only make employees more frustrated and less focused.
OP is raising an important point about how Q management will use layoffs as a stick to make everybody work even more.
