Thread regarding Northwestern Mutual layoffs

The Weekend in review: idiocy continues

In this episode of ridiculous questions that our leaders continue to entertain (but shouldn’t), I give you the top 3 ridiculous weekend questions for early October:

  • Yet another p2 complaining about not getting promoted to a senior role even with 7 years experience. Them somehow camping out in a role meant for recent college grads is clearly someone else’s problem and not them just being a bad engineer. Their inability to differentiate between time in profession and actual skills is also totally not a red flag. They could be a senior engineer anywhere else, but not here, so the best move is to wait it out for another few years (great critical thinking skills!)
  • Some privileged employee who apparently doesn’t like Starbucks coffee and wants an alternative in the new north building. Of course that’s where the question ends, as providing what’s wrong with Starbucks or perhaps a better alternative is something that we should leave our C-level executives to guess! Fun!
  • Some clueless employee who thinks not notifying your manager about an internal job they’re pursuing is a great career move. In this alternate reality, the prospective hiring manager never reaches out to their current manager about their job performance and is always pleasantly surprised when to find out they had zero business sense to notify their current leader.

The CEO is the deadweight and entitlement mentality at NM.

Usually Infosys charges a high billing rate. So NM might have ended the contract with Infosys as a measure of cost reduction. In the software projects bidding process the next low bidding vendors like Wipro & HCL would have got the contract. My team in Risk, sorry typo Rust Service is filled with Wipro folks.

@2wua+1p2Wj9aX I am shocked, we actually lost all of our outsourced teams and onshore Infosys reps because of the cuts, along with all of our contractors that we couldn't convert to FTE in time.

I agree 100% to the previous post. Also now outsourcing is in full swing. So only uncle’s hailing from Bharat are entitled to get promoted to mgr, asst. dir and Sr. dir in tech. NM does this to grow offshore team. Believe me, when these guys go back to Bharat they won’t even get jobs in IT industry. If they happened to make it, they can get only P2 positions.

The issue is not with promotions but instead the reverse discrimination that occurs within this company that prevents promotions. SARE, DEI, and WIT all enable this company to act unethically and illegally. The individuals asking are probably in fear of retaliation and beat around the bush with these vague questions. There is so much extremism within the walls of NM that this has become a very hostile workplace.

Forget about proMotion. The work environment is so stressful that feel glad if you get Motion in the morning.

Someone just responded to the Weekend post about not getting a promotion in 7+ years from P2 to P3 and it really sounds similar to what someone keeps posting on here. Hmmm.. But the response to that post I feel is great, that the person really needs to take a hard look at themselves, ask for feedback, and consult with people about what could be blocking them for a promotion.

I agree that The Weekend should not be used for asking about coffee options in New North. There is a form in the DC where you can leave feedback for the New North team. I personally don't want to hear our SLT debating coffee of all things.

The manager and promotions question makes sense if you have some insider knowledge. A buddy retired from NM as an SD shortly after I started, and there are multiple examples of managers sabotaging internal promotions so that they would not lose valuable talent on their teams. Hence why I'm sure some would want to keep their internal job searches secret.

I personally would love The Weekend to focus more on items like "How is our expense curve flattening coming along?" and other business topics.

I miss the days of the old Northwestern Mutual when we were the Quiet Company. A lovely company comprised of ladies and gentlemen who were cordial to one another. We'd take turns bring into the office three-bean salads and homemade strudel cake to share with one another. The coffee was plentiful and free. We each had a nice work station, and you could even request to have a lamp added to your desktop. Office supplies always available, and people were on the honor system and didn't take excessive amounts of notepads or black fine tip Bic pens to bring home. Every summer we look forward to company picnic. The meats, funs and sodas were generously provided by the company. Managers would bring their Weber grills in from home. light up the charcoal and grill the array of bratwurst, hotdogs and hamburgers. Why there was even tuna salad provided so those with high cholesterol had something nice to eat. Everyone would bring a desert. Why one year, three of us made a big batch of German potato salad and brought that to the picnic too. Oh the requests we got for the recipe! I miss those days when we liked each other and worked together so finally. And sure, our desk chairs might not have had arms but we didn't care. Why? Because we were proud to work for the famous Quiet Company. Where saying you worked at Northwestern Mutual was a badge of honor among your neighbors. Oh, and I remember too when were only too willing to buy life insurance for our families. Recognizing what a wonderful benefit it was to work for a company that provides for love ones when the policyholder conks out. And the premiums weren't bad at all. Sure, it might mean you couldn't afford the vinyl roof option on the brand new Ford Crown Victoria that you were buying that year for the family that year, but sacrifices were part of the norm. I'm grateful for this venerable company. I'm grateful that they provide a square meal during lunchtime. I'm grateful of the wonderful views of the Milwaukee lakefront that are afforded our gleaming office tower. I'm grateful that the company provisions the washrooms with good quality toilet paper and paper toweling. I'm grateful for the security guards who provide for our safety each day and smile at me when I walk through the entrance in the morning. And finally, I'm grateful for Mr. Schlifske and the fine men and women who selflessly lead our company. And to our wonderful agency force.

There remains a lot of deadweight and entitlement mentality at NM. The vast majority of who should thank their lucky stars every day that they are employed by NM (for now) because they have minimal shot of landing comparative employment with another company or organization. Most destined to work in the gig economy or at Walmart. Like others have said, the conscious shift to a full blown meritocracy can't happen fast enough within this company. Fortunately it is happening.

Either the guy asking the Starbuck question or the C-level exec. who is answering the question, will be fired before the completion of the New North project.
There is no job security for anyone out here!!!!
