Thread regarding Qualcomm Inc. layoffs

Is it acceptable to the US government for Qualcomm to layoff US employees and replace them in India?

The US government blocked the Broadcom takeover to protect US technology. The US government tried to ki-l off Huawei to protect Qualcomm / US dominance in wireless. Yet, Qualcomm is effectively exporting technology to India. All those employees in India who gain experience have no obligation to stay. 2-3 years down the road, they can be working for other companies. I suggest you write to your congressman/woman about this!

Ludicrous. I watched QC historical layoffs over about 10 years. (You can see the employee count by region in the new PH tool)

After one layoff, SD dropped by about 3500 people. Within 6 months, India and China as a group increased by (gasp) about 3500 people. What a surprise!

Exactly this thing happened 2-3 times. Some well-run American-built FAANG companies just refuse to do this and hollow out their core engineering skills.

I had one manager that kept trying to convince me to go to India for 3-4 months to teach one of the teams there how to be product design engineers. No way. FU.

OP - not willing to politize the thread, what you initially described was once upon a time when the WH had America as a priority. Since then, we have Brandon, the worst, in charge and so we are where we are.

Ultimately Qualcomm will pay the cost of offshoring. There will be another company ready to take it's place soon enough and Q will not be able to keep up. I mean, it's not like we are doing great at keeping up with new tech these days anyway.

Pathetic asking the US government to bail you out of this mess created by a private entity helmed by an incapable leader.

Interesting question. Once the government steps in, seems like it moves the needle somewhat away from free market capitalism and a bit toward socialism. Whether that's good or bad is too big a question for me to know. But for now, the shift of labor toward low-cost parts of the globe will continue.

You are dreaming this has been going on for over 30 years, since billclinton sold us out. Just take it and get it over with. Take you package and run as fast as you can. Find a good company.

Its a free a market. As much as the whole game is unfair, think of a world where the opposite happens. If job security was given, there would be really bad performers.

If Murthy can join Intel directly from Qualcomm, then anything is game

Considering ALL politicians have stock holdings, they more than welcome shipping jobs over seas. This has been happening for the last 50 years. If you believe the solution is writing to your congressman/woman you are just wasting your time and effort.

Politicians are in it just for themselves and absolutely don't care about the common man.
