What are the chances there will come a point when we won't have to worry about layoffs all the time? There was a time when that was the case, as some of us oldtimers can attest to. There were layoffs, but nowhere near in the quantity and scope as there are these days. I miss having some semblance of job security.

When your kids will be out of school...and you can gtfo costly area
You get 5 or 6 years these days call it a win. Or take some safe low paying job.
Executive management is paid the big packages to foresee things that engineers like you and me cannot. They took the money and bungled.
It was their job to ensure that Q does not undergo the same bloat. But the executive management allowed the top management to build empires. They did not account for the fact that money cannot continue to be cheaply borrowed for ever. They did not account that the share buy backs may need to be reduced and we need to tighten our belts. Now, we suffer.
Unfortunately, that is the way it works in the current crony capitalist system.
I was a consultant for 20 years, made twice the money, because work and people are important but companies will never take care of you, and I laughed at the propaganda of "we're a family". Business is amoral. I've seen plenty of layoffs; this is nothing new. Don't be defined by your employment. In America you've always got to have something else up your sleeve.
Yes, I remember how Q proudly stated that it would not resort to layoffs following the 2008 crash, like our competitors, but rather, Q would use the market downturn to build a greater lead over them. I don't recall seeing any large layoffs until the big one in 2015. Q used to be a great place. Sadly, those days are gone.
This is the way
Big hires, big fires , this is the way.
Never
No chance for such a secured job in the future as long as you’re in SD.
