Thread regarding VMware layoffs

It was fun while it lasted

When I first started in I.T. at a help desk job back in 1998 (hard to believe it's been 25 years), some of my teammates and I were expressing our surprise at how much compensation levels were rising in the tech industry, particularly for people who had their certifications like CNE, CCIE, or MCSE. The actual numbers aren't that important; the point is that they seemed huge to us at the time, so much so that we wondered how much longer they could continue. I'll never forget how my teammate Alan commented, "If it comes to an end, I'll just tell myself it was fun while it lasted".

Looking back now, as the story of VMware appears to be nearing its final chapter, I can't help but hear Alan's words in my head. It wasn't anywhere near perfect, but it was fun while it lasted.

"As the story of VMware appears to be nearing its final chapter"

This final chapter has been anticlimactic in many ways. VMware will become another footnote in enterprise software history. From the prior state of virtualization leadership, to the current state of multi-cloud fast follower.

That said, I'm eager to start-over again, at another enterprise software pioneer. A new chapter of fun awaits us all, somewhere else (not at BC, as an employee of this cash cow harvester - 'no fun' in their business model at all).

It is annoying that for nearly every job posted on LinkedIn that there are hundreds of applications in the first few hours.

Which is why you shouldn’t wait until after redundancies because you will then have 1000s more with similar skills looking for jobs.

The dot com bubble bursting was worse than this, we will all survive. It is annoying that for nearly every job posted on LinkedIn that there are hundreds of applications in the first few hours.
