Thread regarding VMware layoffs

Just been contacted by a PSO recruiter - that MUST be a joke, right ?

I left 4 years ago and a recruiter just asked me about an opportunity as NSX Senior Consultant in PSO.

That got to be a joke, right ?

I replied asking for a contractual guarantee that the job isn't getting cancelled for four years and asked for package details or I won't talk anymore.

Haven't heard back funny enough (job's in Europe).

PSO one of the functions in the business still recruiting/getting headcount approved. Does anyone else know of any others?

VMware recruiters are trying to look busy, just before the upcoming cuts.

But activity doesn't matter. HR roles are often terminated shortly after acquisitions.

OP here - just to clarify. When I left VMware 4 years ago I left as Staff Architect (P5) and I am currently working in a start up on about the same package that I was on at VMware. I felt a BIT insulted that a recruiter seemingly understands the VMware structure to then offer me a P4 consulting job even though I haven't been in a consulting job in now 6/8 years.

Of course no one would give you a 4 year guarantee. It was more me trying to make a point with the recruiter what VMware is currently going through and trying to show him that this is a highly risky thing to do. To come from a full time job that I am in for 3 years now (this is my second job after I left the mothership) just to start in probation again with an uncertain future.

If you are looking to switch, why not take the job and in worst case get the severance. Easy money IMO.

That's the thing. I am in Europe and local laws won't even give you the right to statutory redundancy until you have reached a 2 year tenure at your job.

So severance or not - it isn't guaranteed as they have two reason to fire me without having to justify it : 6 Months probation - so notice period is 2 weeks and the fact I haven't completed my 2 years yet. So I could leave my 3 year job to potentially start October 1, just to be laid off October 31 and there'd be nothing I could do legally.

Recruiter came back to me offering to talk to HR to see if my previous tenure can be added and I had to remind him that I left 4 years ago so that would work - plus they wouldn't be able to afford me anyway.

Seriously though - I really hope it works out for you guys and the whole thing will be over soon so you can get on with your working life without worrying.

Because commonly whether you are entitled to any severance or not is based on tenure. It costs nothing to get rid of someone who just started and needs no justification.

If you were valuable enough to be guaranteed a job for 4 years then I doubt they would be reaching out unprompted. They need warm bodies and you fit the bill.

There is a huge shortage of NSX resources out there. I’m in the partner space and it’s 2 months to get a resource. VMware comes to us for help.

They could pick up a day worker from the closest big box home store, and that person would undoubtedly be better than 98% of the PEs now.

CIBG will give $10 to take the some of their PEs.

Sure they can... but probably won't.

Even if there wasn’t a takeover.
No one can guarantee a permanent job is safe for 4 years.
