Thread regarding Disney layoffs

Charter Dispute

Everyone in the linear industry knows John Malone has been making cable deals since the 70s, and he's currently the primary stakeholder in WBD as well as Charter who is going hard after Iger right now.

Meanwhile, Comcast is pushing the Hulu sale up, which is going to blow a massive hole in the Disney balance sheet.

Bakish and Paramount have their own issues but don't sound like they're coming to Disney's defense in the Charter dispute either.

I'm not calling it collusion, but boy, it smells like collusion.

Some DGEC leadership already being told to have cuts identified by end of Q4 “just in case“ they’re necessary

Can confirm.

I don't know. Before Candle Media, Blackstone had primarily been invested in real estate so it was a weird investment to begin with. My best guess is maybe Blackstone sees an opportunity for the Candle guys to position Disney into a situation that would give them an opportunity to eat up Disney shares given that primary shareholders like Blackrock and Vanguard have taken severe hits to their bottom lines as well.

I have a question for you. Why is Blackstone letting Staggs and Mayer contract with Disney since we’re technically a competitor of Candle Media?

I'm two direct reports away from alan; connections are not as tight as you might think.

They know the problem, management knows the problem, the audience knows the problem, but execs will play musical chairs until the company is sold off for spare parts because the tenants of conscientious capitalism are tantamount to driving social change.

If you disagree with the theory that staying the course will eventually yield profitable results, an exit plan would not be a bad idea because even a hostile takeover will probably not mean much.

We got worked. Gave them everything they wanted including access to Disney + and ESPN +. This will destroy the ARPU for both. All this accomplished was to anger millions of people in America's biggest markets. I know Iger stacked the board with his cronies but something has to happen or we are going to be in dire straits for years to come. I never wanted to see a hostile takeover but now it appears inevitable and it might just be for the good.

iger had no leverage. charter got everything they asked for and disney lost 8 revenue-producing channels.
"With Iger getting squeezed from all sides Mayer is working phones to have a sale from GEC by EOY"
you can bet those 8 channels will be part of this sale package, which no longer have the same value they did only a week ago.

Without a doubt.

I’m sure you’ll deny you have anything to do with this, John, but who are you kidding: This is classic Malone handiwork. I’ve written on the “typical carriage dispute” about a thousand times over the last 20 years, and they’re always eye-glazing affairs that come down to money and nothing more. But here you are pulling a chess move at a game of checkers.

Comcast could have given Disney until January to come up with the cash for Hulu, but they exercised their put option right after the Charter debacle knowing full well Disney is vulnerable, and Zaslav/WBD are letting Charter do their dirty work.

With Iger getting squeezed from all sides Mayer is working phones to have a sale from GEC by EOY and there will absolutely be >$5B in cuts in Q1 and will include parks. There is no way Iger makes it through the rest of his contract and I think he knows it. Right now it's just about stopping the bleeding which seems almost impossible at this point.
