The Union Pacific Railroad just hired the most cutthroat CEO to come in and eliminate jobs! After previously serving as COO his philosophy seems to be eliminating costs by eliminating his most skilled workers. Why? So the shareholders make more money. Not to improve the business.
How can you simultaneously promise safety and service while cutting jobs for your skilled and experienced workers? You end up hiring unskilled workers without the experience and safety goes way down due to the lower quality of work and inexperience. You also drive away these experienced and skilled workers by cutting pay, or hours, demanding more unpaid overtime and you will run your business into the ground. Money cannot be the bottom line in doing business. Start by providing a quality product and the money will be there.
