Thread regarding 3M layoffs

Gaslighting

I am tired of being gaslighted by my manager. I worked for other companies in the Twin Cities and 3M is the only company where it seems 3M teaches its managers the art of gaslighting to a perfection.

Previously someone mentioned the favorite “gaslighting” phrase of managers at 3M is “you do not have a growth mindset”. My manager loves to use the phrase he or she “is not a team player” or is “not liked” by others when they disagree with our manager.

I would love to know whether anyone here has also experienced gaslighting. If so, do you have any favorite gaslighting phrases?

Since KCI came on board we have all been gas lit because the entire MSD team is legacy KCI. They are the worst.

Yes, it's absolutely common approach now at 3M. Managers refuse to accept responsibility so they shift blame to us. Maybe the pressure cooker is too much for them
Last week, I thought I was going insane based on manager's comments to me that were untrue. "You weren't listening to the exact words". Ummm, yes I do. Gaslighted and treated like children vs professionals. No gaslight comments to this post please either.

I am happy someone started this discussion. I do not think gaslighting has anything to do with acknowledging your flaws. As I understand it gaslighting is more about a manager telling others or you you said something you know you did not say so you question your sanity. I have seen managers say they never said something in a meeting even though others in the meeting heard it.

I think Varys previously mentioned the favorite gaslighting phrase of managers is “you do not have a growth mindset” without any examples or evidence. How does one respond to such a vague accusation?

I am just a peon and am trying to stay under the radar.

For what it’s worth - please self-reflect, if only to confirm your viewpoint. I recently spoke with someone that has a notoriously short temper and is not inclusive, expressing frustration that they can’t get promoted to leadership. They have serious flaws precluding them from leadership and appear not to acknowledge it. It is clear as day to everyone around them, including their spouse and children.

Poor leaders need to self reflect too; and if poor leaders are pervasive, then it’s time to change jobs. But the manager may be communicating a valid message that the employee refuses to hear.

To be clear, 3M’s leadership is not good. But to be a top candidate for a good job, you cannot indict your previous employer nor gaslight yourself about your own flaws.

This is a problem at the company, even at and by the highest levels. It will not change until it is no longer tolerated.

Gas lighting is a very serious issue. It is a form of psychological manipulation and emotional abuse that has been around for many, many years. It is not a millennial issue.

Managers who gaslight their direct reports tend to be insecure and/or jealous of an employee. Most gaslighters are narcissistic. Almost all are controlling and employees fear them.

Almost all companies have gaslighters. I feel the current dire situation at 3M could be the reason why 3M’s managers appear to gaslight more than at other companies. It could also be the culture of 3M.

Gaslighting can result in serious health consequences in the victims of gaslighting. It is not easy to understand gaslighting. I am sure our HR Department does not understand gaslighting

Why do I understand gaslighting? My undergrad degree is in psychology and many of my colleagues in my division come to me when our manager says something that makes them question their perception. I am not a millennial but have seen gaslighting at 3M and know how harmful such behavior is to the mental health of our colleagues.

Oof. I am gas-lit by my management all the time. Literally 90% of the time I feel like im crazy because of how everything that I feel is an issue is not to management, and then it some how gets twisted into my fault! When I talk to people outside of 3M i feel validated, but when I talk to people who have been at 3M a long time, I’m told thats just the way it is, sorry. Like wtf! Ive been told that the best thing I can do in my situation is to change jobs. Cant do that internally so I’ve been looking at new jobs externally.

I feel (and hope!) that the types of shenanigans that take place here wouldn’t be tolerated anywhere else… I don’t know why management is allowed to get away with the sh-t they pull.
