The permanent offer doesn’t seem that attractive. Not only can you get laid off at any time but you’ll be stuck with a draining daily commute to the office. You also have a lot less time to job search and schedule interviews.

Let's get real unfortunately.... BC is a different machine!
VMware is/was a great company!
I have worn the VMware badge with pride!
Positives outweigh negatives.
I think those who feel the same probably feel dislocated with what is on the Horizon..
Whilst working from home, I have provided weeks/months of hours outside of "the official working day" FACT!!!!!
Why? Respect and understanding!

The return to office thing is beyond stupid. All that means is BC is going to have a lot of really tired and probably not very motivated people who will spend 2 hours in their cars each way, not being productive and chomping at the bit to leave as soon as they can. Leadership are being total mo--ns on this.
"I might get bored after a few months not having anything to do"
I'm keen to utilise my time delving into emerging tech and cracking on with projects that have been gathering dust.
Learning from the past recessions, i don't live above what I can afford and been maximizing my saving for years. There is no job security, what goes up must come down and repeat itself in a decade or so. I can definitely wait for over a year. The severance is a free vacation. Only problem is, I might get bored after a few months not having anything to do. As someone stated, you will eventually find a job. The eventual is what you need to have $$$ to last through. If you have overspent (big house and brand new cars) in the last couple years, you are in a tricky situation. But then, you have impressed some people and have to pay a small price. Good luck to everyone.
You will find another job and all will be well eventually. This is 20+ years in the tech industry speaking.
It’s refreshing to see that many are waiting for severance because they can afford to. I hope that’s true for most.
"You also have a lot less time to job search and schedule interviews."
Which is probably why the employees that have already left decided to act quickly.
That said, I now regret waiting for VMW severance. I've missed the window of opportunity until next year when the U.S. job market is filled with many more new tech jobs.
Not really. Lots of jobs offer the hybrid option so you do have more work life balance: time with your family while still enjoying your work. You only live once and do you wanna spend most of it stressed at work? It’s a choice to make.

So just like most other jobs then?!
both ca and symantec became part of the Broadcom family after the fiscal year ended. I expect the same this time, most likely no VMware severance under new company. I'll take perm offer.
What's your offer like compared to what you are currently making?
Op is correct. We will hardly have time to live and enjoy a few more $s we get.
No time to interview and prepare for them. We are stuck now
Welcome to life, and it is a bit late to be bringing up this topic.
