One of my product specialists just informed me they have been let go. Sounds like their director will be taking a demotion to take their role potentially.

Now a citizen but I was on H1b when I moved to the country 20 years ago and I never worked for a consulting company. I was paid and treated at par with US citizens. Yes companies had to pay extra for my green card and h1b processing but they never reduced my pay for that nor charged me for that. These are law abiding companies.
But it is unfair to say there is no exploitation in this system. people should accept that fact. H1b is exploited by all the outsourcing companies and consulting companies with tons of layers between the employee and the actual employer. They are paid bare minimum to survive in a number of cases. That is a fact.
STOP blaming other people for your own inability to find a high-pay job
Total bullsh-t. H1b is a means to get cheap labor. The NSF and DOE have been using this system, in fact invented it, to get cheap scientific labor. Totally support that. It is a global market. That said, it is hard for Americans to just say, yea, let’s compete with the world when you just want to be able pay the mortgage in the country where we were born. Good and bad parts of this world order. In the end all us tech folks find a way to survive.
"The H1B program has become a low-cost way for employers to get (low quality) employees without having to pay market wages."
- you people have no idea how much efforts and money a company pays to even acquire H1B visa for an employee. Not to say that there is a pretty high wage limit for these visa applicants to get approved in the first place. We are not talking about ICC here. It is the case for all legit companies. STOP blaming other people for your own inability to find a high-pay job.
The H1B program has become a low-cost way for employers to get (low quality) employees without having to pay market wages.
It’s been that way for over 30 years
There's going to be a recession... the recession is coming...
What recession? Who was saying that?
H1B quotas have been increased to accommodate these shortages.
Why, it's the same people that say "These kids don't want to work", and "There is a labor shortage."
There is no labor shortage.
The kids want to work, just not for wages that are insulting at a time when corporate profits are at record levels, and C-level are doing better than ever.
The H1B program has become a low-cost way for employers to get (low quality) employees without having to pay market wages.
C-level execs don't care about the reputation of the company. They only care about making some monetary impact that they can use to springboard to the next Peter-
principle promotion to a new job.
It's all ok though, because the company will make more of a profit in the short term, sacrificing long term health, reputation, quality and longevity so the management gets their bonus.
Sorry to hear that. Do you know if you have to pay the severance back if you found a new job within 2 months and get to keep the rest of the money ? Since your email is shut, not really sure if you are still VMware employee for the next 2 months. If you aren't then, you are free to accept any roles out there.
I have nothing from HR yet - still waiting
Offered severance, but still, wow
@nou+1omJIx9H US still short of talents and tech workers. There are gaps out there that the big corporations still need. H1B quotas have been increased to accommodate these shortages. So .. yah don’t worry. Plenty of jobs out there with competitive salary.

Sorry to hear that. No severance?
I was just let go and I was a product specialist - I got no notice, no PIP, and they just cut off my email. VERY unfair.
Lets flood the already flooded job market. Yayyyyyyy
Every IC under Paula Hodgins is a product sales specialist, just as an example...
every BU has them except CIBG, I think...
Can someone please tell us what a product specialist is? Sales, marketing, etc. What is it?
Change is coming, from the government. Protecting 'favored' VMW employees will end.
"California may become the first U.S. state to ban Caste discrimination. The California State Assembly near-unanimously approved a bill adding Caste to the list of protected categories under state anti-discrimination laws. The discussion is controversial in South Asian communities: Activists allege that discrimination continues in places like the U.S. tech sector"

What is a product specialist?
Sounds like the "director" wants to protect his job because he knows that Broadcom won't be keeping all these middle managers on the payroll.
OP, did they receive any official mail? Or a verbal notification?
If official, what would be the notice period? 60 days?
I heard from someome who heard from someone, so it has to be true.
Are product specialist sales?
If it was a performance based layoff their director wouldn’t be taking a demotion to take over their territory.
Sounds like a performance-based layoff.
Is it the velo loud ? I just heard is it true?
