Thread regarding VMware layoffs

I was just let go at VMware

No pip, no real warning. Worked my --- off. Was under quota 1H - but on target to be well over before they took the new Tanzu Intelligence stuff from Cloud Management. Manager was brutal - had the title of the invite of wanting to know about one of my deals. No kindness, no nothing. Just bo-m. There were also mistakes in my comp, mistakes that others in the team had brought up over 2 months ago. This manager clearly wanted to have a spot to land in as this was their job before - I had only been in place for 9 months in this role and had worked my a-- off. Even said, " I will be taking over your role starting now". Hold on to your hats folks- this place is going to start to be run like a sweatshop. It is truly the Hunger Games - I just know this person will get theirs. This manager is about to find out that this job with all the per core price increases, packaging changes, no CSM - is going to be very very hard and much harder than the job they had before. I wish them a good helping of old fashioned karma, as the customers are getting the brunt of this, and anyone staying in this job will have their reputation tarnished with their customer base. You don't recover from that. So, they probably did me a favor. Oh, and no HR on the phone either. Chinese sweatshop style firing.

If you sold cloud packs you must've been part of the cmbu. There have'nt been any other layoffs so I'm sure this was performance-based and/or personal. Sorry to hear. Good luck to you.

Yes - they truly did me a favor. My pipeline had been low but that was because the new Cloudpack stuff didn't show in VMstar for some time. In my last call with my manager - they were happy that my pipeline was now much higher. Wasn't any difference really, was just that the system was now fixed. This manager just looked at the systems without doing any digging and made decisions based on that. Glad to be out of the toxicity and know I can find a much better role!

Rest assured that there is no law that HR needs to be on the call. Sure, manager consults with HR but the business decides to axe someone in the end as long as it is not too bad for the company to get sued.

Sounds like yet another manager who should not be in that role.

YOU chose to be robbed of your empathy.
Don’t blame the system.
Be a fücking human being for chrïst’s sake

I tried this once. It backfired. Gave positive criticism during a layoff. Words got mixed up. Positive criticism gave the impression that the person was going into a PIP and not terminated. The next week was awkward. HR / IT did not deactivate any of their accounts, and they showed back up ready to take on the world.

They then tried repeatedly to interview back on the team because the feedback gave the impression that we wanted them back.

HR taught me a few hard lessons after that.

Sounds unbelievable that a manager plans to take your job from you. Don’t believe one bit of this. Lol

@1evf+1omGdKAf.
So many terms, PIP layoff, non PIP layoff, needs improvement, those are not termination, right? What HR worry about wrongful termination lawsuit if those are not termination?

While I'm sorry you were let go, this is not the fault of the manager. I've had to let people go. There is a script managers are supposed to read. Keep it simple. Keep it short. Do not give too many details. Tell the person and then fire off an email to HR to give them the go-ahead to disable accounts. It su-ks as a manager to be in that spot because we are robbed of our empathy at the time when it is most needed. HR is worried about trying to compromise after a decision is made and opening the company to wrongful termination lawsuits.

I've done PIP layoffs, and non-PIP layoffs. Needs Improvement does not have to go to PIP. Many times we will hold off on a PIP to wait for approval to RIF. If you're on PIP, you have a lifeline to stay. If you're not, and in Needs Improvement, then you can be laid off directly without a PIP. They are not required.

I'm happy you received a generous severance from it at least. Keep your chin up and find your next new adventure.

''Sounds like you were in the Needs Improvement category in Workday.'

He said no pip. Means not in 'needs improvement' category.'

There is a big gap between someone being categorized as "needs improvement" and being on a pip. Times have changed. Performance management with pips is incredibly hard on the manager and the individual. It is so much easier to just offer a package and call it a day. Managers have to eliminate the position, which means they can't backfill for three months or so, but that is usually faster than going through the pip start to finish. I used to work at a place where there was a RIF with a severance budget every six weeks to simply help managers cut people without going through formal performance management.

If they give severance and offer CORBA, then it's not performance issue, and there is no CAUSE.

which org? BU? CIO?

4 months plus 1 week per year of service is better than what’s officially available on source which says two months if you are not required during the notice period.

Hopefully they paid a few months of CORBA as well.

Still su-ks to be laid off. Good luck to you

What about the WARN notice? Are you in the US? Will you have full benefits for 60 days? Will you get the H1 bonus?

Your own comments make it sound like you were axed for performance and not laid off.

Sorry to hear you go. So for your future employment verification, you need to go to Broadcom, or some VMware designated 3rd party, do you know?

Maybe ex-CA guys can help answer the question. If you left CA before the acquisition, will your profile be carried over to Broadcom?

Agreed. You can do so much better than Tanzoo.

I'm so sorry that you got laid off today. VMware is full of "good ole" boys from companies like Pivotal who took over Tanzu. I watched people with zero experience become managers. I watched people with lots of experience be excited on their first day, then fall into depression shortly after because they had no work to do. Why? Because the good ole Pivotal crowd took whatever they wanted and there was nothing anyone else could do about it. I know you feel bad right now, poster, but don't. Those (under qualified managers) like the one you just had aren't going to survive Broadcom. They don't deserve to.
