Was just hired here!
Was offered a job with UHG/Optum and now Im really second guessing leaving my current job. Its a WAH review position. Am I being carless taking it considering the layoffs Im looking at? I don't get why they are hiring if they are laying off?! Also is it really that micromanagy? How so? So sorry to all those that were laid off. I was about 7 years ago and definitely do not want to join a company where it seems to be part of the culture.

I worked with UHC/Optum for 30+ years. I know of people that worked/work 40+ years. Yes some days were frustrating, ridiculously busy and honestly some days I wondered is it worth staying. But now that I am retired and look back, yes it was worth it. I think it is dependent on the area you work. I pretty much stayed in the same area just different positions. Some bosses were fabulous, some stayed around only 6 months (thankfully)! But I had the best work family that today I still have contact with (lifelong friends). So there are ups and downs with every job in Corporate America. Believe me UHG isn’t the only company that gets the negative comments. I hope it works out for you either way! The best of luck!!
Stay where you are. I loved my job and time with the company. I made some great lasting relationships and learned a lot and grew a lot professionally but the years I spent there was laced with fear and anxiety due to layoff culture. Then I was promoted and laid off within 6 months of each other. I also went through the two week redeployment process and applied for many open internal positions. Many of which I was qualified, or even over qualified, and rejected for all. Then after my last day came and went, I was contacted y a recruiter for a position I was initially rejected for to interview with the hiring manager. I was optimistic and scheduled the interview only to receive a robo-email a few days later saying the position was no longer available due to “business changes”. I reached out to the hiring manager because the interview was not cancelled. THEY WAITED A FULL WEEK TO CANCEL THE INTERVIEW A MERE HOURS BEFORE it was scheduled!!! THAT is how the company is run now. Fear of layoffs and poor communication. And honestly, I’m not bitter. I know it all happens for a reason and I will find my next opportunity. I truly did enjoy my time and appreciated the opportunity while I was there but as I reflect now, I don’t think I’d go back at this point if I had the choice to stay somewhere with stability. I hope that helps.
Optum has gotten the reputation for regularly laying off staff. It can happen while other areas are hiring, so it's diffcult to say for sure that you will or won't be impacted, however with the way budget planning is done, if they are hiring this late in the year, the likelihood of layoffs in your new area is lower.
Having said that, there is little security in this company anymore. I was laid off in 2017 and came back in 2019 but am looking to move on. Even with a total of 13 yrs of seniority I don't feel safe, and I've seen folks with more than 20 year's tenure get laid off here. if you can, stay where you are and find another company.
Go back to your employee! Toxic place to work. Massive layoffs
Everyone always has
anxiety no job security.
no, this site is for the grumpy, the bitter. There are many people that love working for this company. WE don't all agree with everything they do, but if you just work and have a good attitude, they will treat you well.
Wanna bet I get all the grump people to push the down arrow on my post? Watch it, it will happen. That arrow is their sign. You will be fine.
Run far, FAR away. No bueno. Very cutthroat and backstabby down here in the trenches playing layoff musical chairs. Look out for your best interests, which is definitely not this organization under this leadership.
It sounds like you are coming from a hospital then you aren't used to it. Hospitals are often understaffed to begin with and rarely will they cut positions, especially with certain roles. I might look at it this way- you likely always have the potential to land another job in a hospital. If the company offered you this WFH job, you perhaps faced more competition to even get the job offer. If you stay at the hospital, will you be fulfilled and happy? I was once in the same boat- stick with what I knew or take the chance on something that was probably going to make me happier (even though change was a bit scary and uncertain).
Honestly my supervisor has been acting like a psycho lately and freaking out over every little thing so it makes sense that layoffs might be happening and she’s trying to save herself by micromanaging everything she can to show her/our teams worth. At this point it’s torture and I hope they DO start layoffs so I can just get outta here. Been here 5 years and 1% raises just aren’t cutting it anymore. Wouldn’t be surprised that they’re hiring for the same role and offering way less money just to cut corners. You might be in the same boat in a few years when YOU make too much money and they can hire someone else for less.
Just cash them checks. There is no job security at any corporation so don't expect it. After a while you just ignore all the layoff noise since the only one that matters is the one with you as the target. Never ruffle feathers and you will be fine. Milk it for as long as you can and learn how to brown nose that is the only skill set that matters.
Just know. your job is not secure and job security has no relationship to how hard you work. They fire everyone, the people with all the knowledge, the low performers and high performers alike. Do not take major financial gambles while here and you will be fine. They have been in a hiring freeze all year with new positions having to be approved at the highest levels so you are likely safe for awhile.
Lol not stupid hence I found this site in my research of the company. Ironically this place pays better than where I have been for 5 damn years with awful raises as well. Unfortunately WAH comes at a price in my experience. Could be making way more if I went back to a hospital but for my family it just doesn't make sense for us right now. Felt under appreciated in my current company so looked elsewhere. However not willing to sacrifice a position that is stable that I enjoy and is actually flexible for what Optum appears to offer. Thank you for those that took the time to respond.
You said WFH review position, if it's HEDIS-related don't do it.
You may want to reconsider joining this place, pay raises annual avg 1%, depts work in silos, good luck trying to get responses from anyone outside your org, raise your concerns and get fired
Layoffs are the norm at big companies. Optum is no different. I've worked here 21 years straight.
What department and role? And yes this is a VERY large org. Nothing new. Even if you were to work for google, or any big org lay offs happens. I say if you really need the job. Just accept it for the time being. Lots of jobs have cuts. CVS health is cutting 5,000 jobs and
t-mobile as well.
It’s really going to depend on your org and manager…
