I have had 13 different managers in the past 17 years. The initial ones were competent, but the last few have no idea what they are doing. Now, to become manager, it is who you know and how well you kiss their a**.

Promotions will lead to the cutting block, so balance it out with longevity targets.

It is when you are in an area that’s always short staffed and does not want to lose you; or doesn’t allow job changes during their busy season. Your manager has to sign off and while not advertised many times they decline allowing offers to go out within their teams.

I’ve gotten my promotions leaving the company then returning at higher grades.

Have the right attitude and work hard, yes. I have been promoted 2x and was just told 3x is in the works.

Depends on what level you are. 24-25-26-27-28 no problems if you're qualified, it's the leap to 29+ that are difficult. corporations are pyramid schemes in a sense, the higher you go up the fewer positions there are

Fun fact. if you report to someone one grade above you, you cannot get promoted and still report to them. For promotions you need to know your value. I told them I expected a promotion next round and did it repeatedly. I was serious in that I would walk without it. I got the promotion. Still eventually walked though.

they sure won't promote when they're doing layoffs. The job market is horrible so employers have all the leverage again.

When I first started no but now almost impossible in certain areas and virtually nothing on internal board. Been trying off and on in current area for years. Told I was perfectly qualified and am doing higher level work. Where are those leadership reqs being filled. Offshore. They are trying to shift the job grades. So 28 does work of 29. 27 works as a 28, etc. Any true advancement reserved for offshore tax breaks. Of course 29 is where you are eligible for stock awards and higher bonuses. Maybe 2 or three onshore 29 plus jobs posted internally every week.
