Thread regarding Adidas layoffs

Thank God Shankland is out!!!

Amongst all the terrible board members that our brand had to endure in the last 5 years (Kasper, Amanda, Brian, Martin), the worst of the lot and by some distance, has been without a doubt, Martin. The damage that he has done to the company in terms of culture and morale is probably worse than what Kasper did (and believe me, that takes a lot of doing).

Come September, let’s celebrate together that this joke of a leader will be finally gone.

The company and GOPS deserve a far better leader! Kasper twice made the big mistake of not giving the role to John. Hopefully, Bjorn will do the right thing and appoint the fantastic leader in HK as the new GOPS board member.

Yeah, under-billing is another great example of how GMs and MDs put their creativity to good use for their personal gain. Often with support from respective sales and finance lead. Below FOB sales to specific customers is as old as RA (was:). Ever wondered why inventory depreciation exists? Hint, accurate balance sheet valuation is secondary.

Another example of a "great" leader - the Vp Cio Office - CG, hired by papa Andreas, the most technical Cio in the history of adidas.

She was a Cto before managing 6 scrum teams, imagine the complexity ! ( https://youtu.be/uH6wDJR3NQs , min 4)

At adidas we got M4 managing more complexity and even P1s, and we do not call them Cto.

So these are the leaders hired at adidas, who interviewed this one and checked her experience?

After HO there is still the second layer to clean. Someone look into under billing that is going on especially in Emerging Markets.

One down, one left from the old corrupt guard. HO needs to be purged now to rid the company of last decade‘s toxins. If anyone needs a hint where to stick the finger: investigate the Morocco subsidiary deal that produced significant damage to the company at the personal benefit of some.

I believe the Supervisory Board meets next week, or the week after… If there is a “decision” in September - then it will only be official after they meet and vote. So, September could still happen. It’s going to cost them several million to admit their mistake and send him packing. I would guess we’ve sold enough Yeezys to dig up the cash.

But - I’m beginning to think it’ll be a while longer, and I’m preparing myself to deal with the daily business on hand rather than spend more energy on the MS agenda.

Doesn't really look like MS is going away anytime soon.
In Todays GOPs all hands , there was no such indication.

BG gets upset with us posting outside of adidas but he has to realize we don’t want to do this but it’s not safe for anybody to talk about MS internally. We want to trust BG but we need him to first show us we can and remove people who have damaged us so badly.
Time and time again it’s proven, speak up or challenge at your peril. We are now supposed to watch MS pull a tear and tell us how he is changing and getting coaching, good for him but not for us! I can tell you he has already reverted to his old ways! It’s simply incomprehensible that this man still survives at adidas. Putting aside his performance in role, a disaster for the organization, he has proven that through sport he has been given the power to destroy lives.

Reputable sources (who know BG well) have consistently told me that MS will not survive. I can’t find a single colleague who supports him. Yet the SLT is stuck chasing whatever idea is thrown out, because they simply aren’t able or willing to stand up to him. It’s just toxic to the core.

However. The supervisory board needs a successor…I would really like to think that if any of the current SLT had a shot, they’d already be in the role.

It’s why my money is still on an external hire, and BG will look for someone who knows what they are doing. The problem is that it’s an impossible job. Someone said it before. GOPS needs to be split up.

But, but, but he’s “working on himself, now that he is aware”.

Is this confirmed?

I can tell you that HR will also be happy to see the back of MS, as will the GOPS SLT. I don’t think people understand that with his type of bullying and controlling behavior it’s not so simple to “stand up to him” or “not tolerate it”. It takes a whole lot of energy just to survive being in the MS sphere.

Once he’s gone, they’ll be partying in HR and the SLT just as much as the rest of us.

Dear God let this rumour be true - MS's rampant abuse of employees (especially women) is well-known but also well-tolerated. He has personally destroyed many good people's careers here over an imaginary infraction or feeling. And let's not forget the "white men are being discriminated against in reverse" stuff he says on ELG/CLG calls - what a true champion of DEI he is. Hopefully Bjorn does the right thing and lets him go soon + his BCG consultant cronies (such as KS who was promoted from Sr Dir to SVP within two years and nobody understands why?).

That's one of the worst things about working here - the way HR & SLT look the other way and pretend they don't see his toxic behaviour. So we as Herzo employees can be let go at any time even with top performance ratings and great culture fit yet MS who abuses employees daily continues to have his multi-million contract renewed. I truly hate working here.

Cold man with no regard for people, particularly women in his organization. Will be hugely symbolic if he exits the organization. No room for bullies at adidas would be the message. He’s broken so many of our great people. There will be a lot of happy people if he is terminated in role.

Something some of my GOPS colleagues say:

Wouldn’t it be a great chance to break up the GOPS portfolio? Easy moves, would be Tech and NTP back into Finance…what is more normal in most large corporations. The current scope makes no sense. And the fact that MS had no previous experience in any of the current GOPS areas should have been a red flag.

If the scope doesn’t change, I’d be worried the next leader also bites off much more than they can chew.

Great, and overdue news….But changing the leader will only be the first step of a long journey! The damage was deep, and the operations team needs a lot of healing now. Keeping my head up, and believing the future is bright!

I’m not sure that the new leader will come from HK though… From what I hear, the bold changes made at the end of last year did not go over well when the new CEO landed just 2 weeks later. Short term headcount savings, but we’re not set up to pick up the workload in HQ…and giving it over to the factories will just add more hidden costs.

My money is on an external candidate.
