Thread regarding Northwestern Mutual layoffs

Product team needs a headcount reduction!!!

Why eliminate only tech positions? The management needs to do some pruning in the product team as well. We have many waste “Business Analyst” out here who have the word “Business” only in the job title. These drama queens know nothing about NM business.

I like that the guy just said generative AI will replace “80% of lower level dev work.”

Not sure if you were trolling or not, but that gave me a chuckle. While you were trying to insult devs (and vice versa), your comment does clearly show you have no idea what you’re talking about when it comes to AI.

Maybe we need each other more than we think?

Most of you arrive at work at 930 and leave work at 330 pm…let’s be honest, none of you have the drive to do more than you need to. Most of the engineers have no idea how the field works or even what products they sell. 90% of the product orgs’ work is explaining simple concepts about workflow which the engineers rarely listen to or adopt into their dev practices. Before complaining about others take a hard look at yourself. With generative AI coming into production, 80% of the lower level dev work won’t be needed.

That's funny. Most of the engineers I deal with are worthless and lean on product mgmt & BAs for every.single.little.thing. They can't wipe their own a$$es without permission. They consistently F things up, without consequence. It's evident that product is held to higher standards than engineering. Their mgr, who, ironically, has no eng experience, is just as useless. Strange how someone thought it'd be a good idea to have someone with zero eng exp lead a team of...engineers. I suppose it's not all that strange if you've been there a while--it's the typical NM way. D-mb, inefficient and wasteful.

The place is a total sh!tshow and I can't wait to eject.

The BA in our team relies on tech for all their reporting and communication needs related to business. The BA recognizes this huge help by awarding bravo to each member of the tech. I've learned that the BA sends appreciation emails to offshore team for similar reason. The AD of product is aware of our situation. However the AD finds himself in a challenging position due to having also received a bravo recognition from the BA. Can we engage the BA solely for the final product launch? That way we could leverage the BA's skill for crafting thank-you notes.

Should the VP of product wish to award us bravo, here's a clue to find us: Money team

Agreed, but it is not just product alone. There are many useless people who have been clinging onto NM. They just hover over
With words and keep blabbering somebody’s hard work as their accomplishments and keep climbing up into the career ladder. The agony about these members being in a team is it costs our time, patience and emotional turmoil.

‘Risk Services’ has surplus product team, not capable of pulling their weight and are more dependent on tech teams. This slows down our sprint velocity.

Agreed! They are everywhere. A distinct product org under CM but Tech has separate product managers. Tech-- ICS seems to have more "product managers" than engineers doing the work. On top of that, there's a VP of Product Manager too. A topic for the weekend......

Much of product ppl are by-products from FIS and Kohls. They were recruited during pandemic. They hardly understand insurance.

Spot on!!! I couldn’t agree more, product managers are just another layer in the org that gets in the way between the business and tech/development. I scratch my head wondering what they do all day aside from trying to make everyone believe they’re actually adding value.
