I would give the ELT a 4 rating.

I personally like the intelligence of our CEO, but I think he needs to work on his leadership. Just making employees feel good about the company and that he cares about their careers, would not only boost morale, but also greatly improve productivity.

There are a lot of ways he could do this:

  • One would be to form an ad hoc employee committee that would focus on helping increase revenue for the company.
  • Another would be to promote people from within the ranks to top leadership positions instead of hiring from outside of the company, which gives the impression that he does not feel confident in the company’s ability to develop leaders for the future.
  • He could also follow Tim Cook’s (CEO of Apple) example and start having lunch on a regular basis in the cafeteria with random employees, which would help change the impression that it’s an “us versus them” thing with the ELT pitted against everybody else.
  • Another is he could have a monthly Q&A session with employees, lasting one hour, and not be afraid to address hard questions, because I think most employees, while currently unhappy, really love this company and want it to do well.

I wonder if Black Rock owns a majority stock in the outsourcing companies?

I wonder when the ELT will stand up and say, this is the focus of our company and this is the future. Instead of listening (and paying) for external consultants to think and talk for them? The ELT needs to earn their paychecks.

Remember when we had viewpoint surveys and it genuinely seemed that the ELT gave a $hit what the employees were thinking? Peperidge Farm remembers. Imagine how terrible the results would be if they had one now.

You only have to look at how our stock price has performed over the last year against MPC and VLO to know the answer
