AMD Exec Says Intel IFS is Destined to Fail

A senior AMD executive has implied that the most significant strategic change implemented at Intel under the stewardship of Pat Gelsinger was misguided. Intel's newfound enthusiasm for being a contract chip manufacturer for other companies, a key part of its IFS strategy, goes against the grain for a successful modern chip design company, hinted Darren Grasby, EVP for strategic partnerships and president of AMD EMEA.

Intel should execute based on what AMD executive says, because....??? Of course the 2 companies are going to have different ideas of what it takes to succeed. No harm in having the 2 US companies try different things and see who succeeds. In my opinion, it's not in AMD's best interest to have TSMC be their only Fab option, so Intel succeeding in IFS but failing in CPU design would actually be best case scenario for AMD.

My thoughts on AMD is that they're highly dependent on AI to succeed and grow in today's marketplace, and as of June 2023 they had no big customers (Google it).

Also, it was recently announced that they plan on purchasing Nod.ai which tells me that they don't have the talent (or confidence) inhouse to compete with Nvidia in the AI space. This might help them, and it might not. All we can do is wait and see.

Who are the biggest user of leading edge node?

Apple, MediaTek and Qualcomm for mobile, You think Intel can compete on cost or offering with TSMC?

In HPC/AI you have AMD, Nvidia, Microsoft, Google, Facebook all competing with Intel, who would go to their competitor and expect best price or treatment ?

No way Intel IFS get anything but US government or any real customer without giving away the technology at a loss.
