This "everyone" is a group of people who ignore official emails and meetings, ignore conversations in Slack, and instead come to an anonymous message board.
We should not cater to their whims.

It was also clarified that those that are getting severance packages are not going to be notified prior to close.

Terminations will be sent post close. The assumption here is that you're locked out of your VMW email post close so they will need to send your severance package communication to your personal address.
In any case, in the US, I would assume if you don't get anything in your VMW email by 20th your prospects are not good.
This is likely is scammer trying to phish employees with emails like they are coming from Broadcom, please be vigilant
Do you typically need alerts to check your inbox, beyond an incoming mail notification?
Is the reason the company has asked everyone to make sure your personal email is up to date so they can mail your termination to your home details and lock you out of company systems?
How the he-l would anyone here know this already?

I was laughing to myself earlier thinking about the poor employee whose offer went to spam in mid October and spent the remainder of the month not knowing anything… :-)
