Q- Changes in EdTech

What's happening? Are the schools taking online degrees in house? Reducing offerings?

Do the same people teach for different universities? The same class regardless of what the student pays.

Corrective plan? I feel for you admissions counselors. It's a big decision to commit to a program & having sales targets must be torture. I guess you can't have commission or the optics would be even worse. I hope it pays well.

As an admissions counselor for 2u, I can tell you that we never ever took on the decision for the school to admit, or not admit. That was totally on the school. I can tell you that it is definitely a sales job. We were told that from day one. We are told by managers to create urgency and have the student deposit, even when they still have months before they truly have to deposit just to get them hooked. We also tell them to fill out a FAFSA and get federal loans. We call them once a week sometimes two times a week and we push them through. Although typically an admission decision is good for one year, we are not to tell them that. It’s definitely a high pressured sales job, without commission. The more you bring in, the better. We need to bring in an unrealistic amount of registered students or we are put on a corrective action plan.

I was lied to about the professors being from the actual university for the online program. No offense to anyone who teaches these online courses but it's a misrepresentation that needs correction.

I see posts on here that the CEO is trying to stop online communication here. Looks like someone is struggling with losing control of the narrative & the ability to retaliate from knowing who wants improved treatment. This guy is a jerk. A dangerous jerk.

I was interested in a program that in person has fairly competitive admissions. I expressed interest in exploring an online option as well & I started receiving calls & texts from the online component.

I accidentally picked up one of the calls & the person speaking to me about the program was selling it. I was confused because my impression of the program was that there were enough students applying that admission was taken seriously & a sales job wasn't necessary.

This school is on the 2U partner list.

Yep - But by the time they saw through the smoke and mirrors of the "tech product" that they'd been sold (that in reality seems to be little more than the cobbling together of other's innovative technologies, repackaged as a new thing?) they were already locked in. But, it seems like it's now the dawning of a new day.

Part of the strength of 2U's business model five years ago was that they signed such long contracts with the universities. This gave the universities time to figure out how to do much of what we do on their own for much cheaper.

Mind boggling may be the number of students who 2u's ac/ic promised-guaranteed their program was being taught by THE professors at fill in the blank prestigious partner school. But if that was not Always the case, All of the time-and students were paying tens or hundreds of thousands, based on the belief that they were receiving the SAME instruction in their program from the SAME professors on staff at the same universities as those who attended their programs on campus?
And how about the guarantee that ALL admissions decisions/faculty review was conducted by school faculty. Were there ANY instances where 2u employees took on the role of application review/admissions decision input as well?
