Thread regarding VMware layoffs

Layoffs

I've been contemplating whether to share this, but I recently participated in a confidential meeting that involved Broadcom. Several changes are on the horizon, such as alterations to the sales compensation plan, reductions in accounts and their respective representatives for those who don't meet Broadcom's strategic criteria, the global team will merge with the strategic team, specialists will be significantly impacted, with some transitioning to engineering roles, but Broadcom intends to retain its engineers. Many business units are already aware of their fate, and it's now a matter of when someone will speak up. Individuals from the strategic team with accounts that don't meet the size criteria may be reassigned to corporate positions or face layoffs. Unfortunately, there will be layoffs in the sales department, and it all hinges on the status of your accounts.

Anyone in Business Ops should be prepared to be let go day 1. I know a lot of people are hanging on to hope but there is no hope for biz ops. No one will be retained, please be mentally prepared for this.

BC segmentation is

  1. Core which is a combined top tier of global enterprise and hc in one
  2. Within core there is platinum gold and silver tier customers
  3. The tier can be different with different BU. They have BC legacy, MF, symantec and agile and soon to be VMW. So you can have a large MF customer who is white space etc. this allows a broader scoping of “strategic” tiered customers across those platforms

4 there is a totally separate public sector with fed and sled and they have the similar tiering of platinum gold and silver

  1. In global there is one BC AD and each platform has their own sales and sales engineer. So it’s easy to see these accounts will all have a vmware specialist and specialist engineer mapped

I’m on the strategic team and can confirm that many of the accounts that were selected in February sales reorg were glorified Corporate accounts.

A good portion of Strategic and corporate accounts are highly transactional. Many customers that’s are accustomed to having dedicated account teams may be in a for a shock (or relief) that they will be shifted to partner managed.

Not when dealing with scümbags like Hock.

This isn't Hock. This is your VP, SVP, and GM. No one cares about Hock, but we should try to respect the leaders we work with.

Confidentiality and trust matter

Not when dealing with scümbags like Hock.

These folks don’t deserve our trust, they are predatory vultures who would sell your grandmother’s gold fillings to make money.

If anything there should be more leaking about the bloodbath that is to come.

FWIW I was told last week I’m going to be laid off by my manager who said he wanted to give me as much notice as he could so that my family can make preparations. I’m a P6 in OCTO.

There’s no new info here. It’s BAU and straight from the BC acquisition handbook.

Thank you for sharing. It helps people prepare mentally, financially, and emotionally. I respect that you are looking out for your colleagues that thought they were safe as part of the sales team.

I'm in a sales support, IC, role and we have been told by our team leader to polish our resumes. Big hint. At this point, managers know what's coming.

"but at no point has anyone asked to jeopardize the legal and ethical requirements of integrity and confidentiality."

FYI, this comment disqualifies you from being a good fit for the prevailing Broadcom culture. Their leadership team is eager to focus on VMW profitability, not ethics.

What's the strategic criteria at BC?

I just assumed that there were strategic and legal reasons those conversations happened in a bubble. EPIC2 values include integrity, and confidentiality is something that I rate at the top of that list. This site is good to ask questions and share encouragement to the teams, often it's gripes and discouraging rumors, but at no point has anyone asked to jeopardize the legal and ethical requirements of integrity and confidentiality.

Please don't continue sharing private information. Use better judgement. There's a reason it's confidential. Firstly, are customers going to trust that internal employees can keep their mouth shut? How about your future employers? I'm not impressed and we've learned nothing new.

You sound genuine, thanks for sharing. This is not surprising, as it fits the strategy we should all expect from Broadcom - so whether you're being real or not, this is the likely outcome. If you have influence, at least try to make it respectable to employees and advocate for being fast and open with them instead of this vicious suspense.

Heard quite similar things from our business leader today. Didn't thought whole BU's will be decimated in a go.

When someone putting their job on the line to give you guys heads up is not fake news. You can believe it or not. Was trying to give people heads up and be mentally and emotionally prepared.

what do you mean by "Broadcom will retain it's engineers"? There are engineers in places like IT/Ops, what happens to them? It's speculated these will be laid off, or are you saying BC will rather place them elsewhere?

BU Sales specialist it is obvious what is going to happen, read between the lines. Consolidated under 1BU or the new VMware, where core will be selling the new cloud skus and focused on a single consolidated offering. This is what VMware needs to be frank, ease of operations, simplify our portfolio, and focus on spending more time with customers rather than internal meetings. We need a single homogeneous solution making us invincible in at least the on prem datacenters. If we survive the broadcome layoffs I believe Hock has the right strategy irrespective of how many poeple will be impacted. I just hope the right people will be impacted.

by

Post ID: @baj+1oQW7aj5

Yes I heard the same. Specialists will be greatly impacted in sales. BC do not want to double and triple pay overlay on overlay. Makes sense to me. Means global and strategic teams will also have to specialise.

I also understand none account aligned Presales roles will be affected. So overlay like principal SE, solution strategiists etc will be gone.
