Thread regarding Qualcomm Inc. layoffs

What would Sanjay Jha do?

Whenever we hit major bumps, this question always comes up:

  • Would this have happened at this scale if Sanjay Jha were the company CEO?
  • And what would he do to prevent this in the first place?

Long ago when he was just an engineer I was interviewed by Sanjay for a job at the Q he did cut the interview short and I didn't get the job until a few years later in 2002. By then it had nothing to do with him. And after the transtion to smartphones I wish Sanjay had been given chance at the top. Murthy was indeed toxic and at the end I heard when he planned to leave the Q his retention negotiation was just to max TC at Intel.

SJ leaving was the result of nepotism

Ok old timer who left QC 9 years ago here
Worked at QC from 1998 to 2014

There were good and bad things about SJ

His exec reviews were super detailed.
You needed to be pretty technically competent to talk to him else he would cut you off like a peon
On customer visits, you selpt when he told you do and even went to the restroom when he told you to.

Blind spots - Murthy
I still wonder how he gave MR a free pass.
I actually thought Murthy was technically competent but anyone with a brain could sense he was super toxic.

SJ's strength was he had a good BS detection meter, was not afraid to confront his execs, not satisfied easily and drove engineering constantly to innovate. The bar was incredibly high.

I don’t know, he only lasted four years as CEO at both Motorola and Global Foundries before they replaced him…not sure he would have been the answer for us either.

Same same ... Qualcomm is a chip company that has not evolved.
