I volunteered for "early retirement" so am glad it's my decision (and saves my boss the grief). School's out forever! A blessing for me but I'm feeling for the thousands dreading this. I was a consultant for 20 years previous to this, because you can never trust a corporation to take care of you.

OP, in that case you should let your VP know so you will get added to the list. That will be blessing to you to get a package, and it will be a blessing to the person whose job is saved. That's double blessing. Like buy one get one free.
Everyone's situation is different. It comes down to age, career goals, finances, health, your network, field of work, etc.
Severance pays the bills while you look for a job full time and has expiry date. Not everyone has passive income stream and 12 months salary earmarked as a rainy day fund.
Accepting the harsh reality of a layoff is not easy when you have a backdrop on economic uncertainty, inflation, interest rates, trade war, government shutdown, aging population that will strain the Social Security rapidly shifting tech landscape that require new skills. You just can't put lipstick on this pig.
But like everything else, this stage will also pass. Prioritize your physical and mental health.
