Thread regarding Broadcom Corp. layoffs

Compensation after acquisition

Question for all BC employees here that were hired through acquisitions, I have couple of questions:

  1. Did you get a raise in your compensation?
  2. If you were at a location when BC does not have presence but your base company does, were you forced to go to office? Even when you are the only one in your team at that location?
  3. If you were asked to RTO and thats something which does not work with your personal situation (like uprooting the family, spouse has job at current location etc), were you given a choice to take severance and leave instead?

As you might have guessed, I am from vmware :-)

  1. Yes. But the RSU's aren't life changing by any means. For someone nearing retirement they provide a decent pad, but that's about it. Bonus is def a warped approach that makes no sense, and certainly much a$$kissing required.
  1. It's all in office period.
  1. Have not heard of anyone doing this.

Notes 2 and 3, it's really dependent on the BU SVP and GM and how critical your skills are to the business. It's also how well your BU brings home the bacon for the Tan-man... One software BU in particular consistently crushes it and Tab-man refers it to selling co----e...

Broadcom management likes to keep everyone in the dark so they can pay as little as possible. If you ask questions, to divulge personal in formation, you will be fired. Very quietly you will be called for a meeting, fired, and you have to leave immediately after collecting personal items.

@2oux+1oMnRs3S, the bonus percentage is fixed by band and ranking. They increased it by 5% last year. IC1 gets something like 12%, up for 40% for IC7. Management is similar up to Senior Director level. Above that is not disclosed. The actual amount of the bonus is based off of both corporate performance and BU performance. So if you band is 30% bonus and corporate and BU both makes their target then your bonus is 30% if you are ranked a 2. If ranked a 1 then you get 150% of 30%. If ranked a 3 you get 50%. But if corporate misses or you BU misses certain key metric then everyone might get zero. For the last five years at least the company has been hitting the corporate targets, though some BUs have missed big and got nothing.

The one major negative about Broadcom is ranking. They don't rank based on team or product. They rank based on band and similar job titles across the entire BU. So you are ranked against people that you do not work with, who might be in different countries and working on different products and teams. There is zero transparency and you have little to no knowledge of how grades are handed out. Cronyism is high and you basically need to be a kiss *** to get a higher ranking.

  1. Others answered already. Take home pay will be the same, bonus amount larger, and RSUs that are life-changing if you can stick it ou.
  2. They consolidated us and rolled us into another divisions building. They ended up closing THAT building too during COVID and sent us all home to remote work.
  3. I have heard of some people that moved away to other states during COVID (where there wasn’t a local office) and they were told when they started the RTO that they had to move at their own expense to a location with an office or be fired. I think they eased up on this policy as things shook out, but I also would guess it is very dependent on the individual and how much they want to keep you (I.e. are you technical and in a key role for a key product).

Really wishing you all at VMware the best. I know it su-ks now waiting to know your fate. We all remember what it was like.

If you are a technical resource and are retained, expect the RSUs to be a big deal. They vest quarterly over four years. Provided you perform, you can expect a grant every year, tho sometimes ppl are given a multi-year grant. By your 5th year, you have four grants vesting every quarter. Assuming the stock continues its trajectory, this can quickly make you wealthy. I do not know answers to your other questions.

I would say any of these posts should always specify country and role type to get a more accurate answer.
No raise and certainly don’t expect any going forward, there is always an excuse around economy despite the stock performing at a strong pace (that seems to be slowing down now).
I believe that will be taken into consideration when they decide whether to offer a role or exit the individual.
Same as second question/answer, an offer being extended would factor that information beforehand.

  1. No and Yes. There was no change to salary. Bonus percentage was higher with Broadcom. RSU's were dramatically higher with Broadcom.
  2. N/A for me, I work in the same office that I worked in previously
  3. This one I am not sure on, have heard rumor, but no concrete information
